Newark (EWR) is the latest airport to welcome Iberia’s state-of-the-art Airbus A321XLR.

The narrow-body jet touched down from Madrid (MAD) for the first time on the evening of Sunday, March 29. The Spanish flag carrier’s new daily service brings with it fresh award availability to Spain and beyond into Europe.

Let’s take a look at the details.

Iberia’s New Nonstop Flight From Newark to Madrid

New routes between the U.S. and Europe are always worth getting excited about. However, the plane Iberia is sending to Newark makes this particular route even more interesting.

Its ultra-long-range Airbus A321 will operate the route daily between the Spanish capital and Newark Liberty International. The schedule is as follows:

  • Depart Newark (EWR) at 11:55 p.m. and arrive in Madrid (MAD) at 1:30 p.m. (+1)
  • Depart Madrid (MAD) at 7:35 p.m. and arrive in Newark (EWR) at 10:25 p.m.

What makes this aircraft special is its narrow-body, single-aisle layout. The A321XLR business class cabin is cozy, including just 14 seats in a 1-1 configuration.

Elsewhere on Iberia’s U.S. route network, the Airbus A321XLR flies to Boston (BOS), New York (JFK), San Juan (SJU), and Washington, D.C. (IAD).

How To Book Iberia’s Newark to Madrid Flight Using Points

As American Airlines and Iberia are both Oneworld alliance members, you should, theoretically, be able to book tickets for Iberia’s new route using AAdvantage miles. However, I had no luck when searching various dates.

I didn’t have the best of luck via Iberia’s own Iberia Club, where I couldn’t find a single available seat in business class. Economy seats were readily available at 16,000 Avios plus $91 in taxes and fees, which is decent value.

The best business-class award availability was via the British Airways Club. There was wide-open availability in business class for 40,500 Avios and $124 in taxes and fees.

Redeeming Avios to Europe on Iberia metal represents far better value than redeeming Avios for a seat on one of British Airways‘ own planes from Newark to London. Both the number of Avios and the amount of taxes and fees are doubled!

Planning to go to London? Maybe go via Madrid instead…

Final Thoughts

Iberia’s new route from Newark to Madrid has increased award availability for those planning high-demand transatlantic hops. At 40,500 Avios for a lie-flat seat, Iberia’s A321XLR could be the way to go if you’re happy to forgo some comfort and luxury in exchange for a great deal.
