The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has ruled that it can process credit and debit card transactions for tax payments. This would eliminate the need for a third-party platform to process card transactions — and maybe even lower fees for taxpayers.

Let’s take a look at everything we know at this point.

The IRS Could Soon Allow Direct Credit Card Payments for Tax Bills

While nothing is changing immediately, the IRS ruled that it is permitted to directly process credit and debit card payments for tax bills. Before this ruling, the agency wasn’t allowed to pay third-party transaction processors or charge processing fees. Now, the agency can pay fees and pass the processing fees on to the end user.

If the IRS decides to move forward with allowing direct payments, taxpayers will still have to pay fees for making tax payments with credit or debit cards, but it stands to reason that they could be lower than they are currently. The agency is prohibited from making profits on fees and is required to charge as little as possible for any fees it does pass on.

We’ll have to wait and see how (and if) the IRS acts in light of this ruling, but it’d be a boon to taxpayers if this change led to lower fees for paying taxes with a card. Currently, the fee for doing so ranges from 1.75% to 2.95%, though fees are even higher for cards issued by American Express, business credit cards, and debit cards.

Generally, because of these processing fees, you have to be sure that your use case for paying taxes with a card is solid. This could mean earning a welcome bonus on a card with a high minimum spending requirement or earning elite status with an airline or hotel co-branded card.

Final Thoughts

While nothing is changing imminently, the IRS has issued a new ruling that opens up the possibility that the agency will process direct transactions for card payments in the future. While taxpayers will still be charged fees, if the agency makes this change, there’s a very real chance those fees will be less than what’s charged now by third-party processors. We’ll continue to monitor any changes from the IRS and will update this story if and when we learn more.
