KLM, the flag carrier of the Netherlands, has officially announced its newest destination in the U.S., expanding its presence in the Pacific Northwest. Starting October 27, 2024, KLM will fly nonstop from Amsterdam (AMS) to Portland (PDX).

Here are the details.

KLM’s New Portland Service

On October 27, KLM will be launching 3x weekly flights between Amsterdam (AMS) and Portland. (PDX). In the summer, the frequency of the route will be increased to 5x weekly.

Flights will be operated with the airline’s Boeing 787-900 aircraft, featuring 275 seats, including 30 business class seats, 21 premium economy seats, and 224 economy seats. The route will operate according to the following schedule:

  • Depart Amsterdam (AMS) 10:25 a.m. — Arrive Portland (PDX) 11:25 a.m.
  • Depart Portland (PDX) 1:25 p.m. — Arrive Amsterdam (AMS) 7:50 a.m. (next day)

The schedule is designed to maximize efficiency, with a short turnaround time of 2 hours from when the flight lands in Portland and returns to Amsterdam. This will be the airline’s latest U.S. route, as the airline already offers direct flights to 13 U.S. cities.

The new KLM flight will replace Delta’s current nonstop service between Portland and Amsterdam. Delta Air Lines and KLM are partners in a transatlantic joint venture. After 15 years of service, Delta Air Lines will no longer operate the route between Amsterdam and Portland.

Growing its footprint in Seattle (SEA) as its long-haul gateway in the Pacific Northwest has been a priority for Delta Air Lines in recent years. Thus, the airline’s decision to reduce service in Portland indicates that it intends to concentrate on its Seattle hub instead.

How To Book

Flying Blue is Air France and KLM’s frequent flyer program. It is one of the most beneficial loyalty programs since you may transfer points from a variety of transfer partners, including Amex Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Capital One, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi Thank You.

The easiest way to redeem points for this new Portland route will be through Flying Blue. If you find saver availability, the program charges 50,000 miles for one-way business class travel between the U.S. and Amsterdam via KLM.

Final Thoughts

The newest U.S. city to get KLM service is Portland, replacing Delta’s 15-year service to Amsterdam. We hope this will stimulate more international traffic between Portland and Europe — and that we see more award availability to Amsterdam using Flying Blue miles.
