Lufthansa’s Miles & More program recently added a new option for using its upgrade eVouchers, and it could be especially useful for frequent flyers.

Up until now, frequent flyers primarily used these certificates to upgrade to a higher cabin. Today, you can also convert them into different types of status-earning points. It’s a helpful option for anyone working toward elite status, especially at a time when upgrade space is scarce.

Miles & More members earn eVouchers when they hit certain status milestones. Most people use them to upgrade into premium cabins — ideally business or even first class — but upgrade space has gotten harder to find.

To give travelers another option, Lufthansa is now allowing frequent flyers to trade these eVouchers for status-earning points instead. Each eVoucher is worth 50 points across all 3 status types, and you can convert up to 4 at a time. There’s no yearly limit, and the points usually show up in your account within a day. Just note: once you convert an eVoucher, those points can only help you earn or renew status in the current calendar year.

There’s also a new perk for higher-tier elites. Senators and HON Circle Members can use eVouchers to carry some of their points into the next year, which can make requalifying a bit easier. Each eVoucher lets you move 100 Points and 100 Qualifying Points forward, and HON Circle Members get an extra 100 HON Circle Points on top. Only points earned after renewing your status this year can be carried over.

Overall, these changes give members a backup plan for eVouchers that might otherwise go unused.

Using eVouchers for upgrades is still the best value, but if you have vouchers you might not use — or you’re just short of a status level — converting them could help you avoid wasting them.

Lufthansa’s newest update to Miles & More doesn’t overhaul the program, but it does give its most loyal members more control over how they use hard-earned eVouchers. Between the limited availability of upgrades and evolving status requirements, having the ability to convert or carry over points offers welcome flexibility.
