Marriott Bonvoy just made a quiet but meaningful change that could help frequent travelers — especially those who rack up a lot of short stays — earn elite status a little more efficiently. While the program’s earning rates haven’t changed, how elite night credits are awarded at select brands has.

Here’s what Marriott Bonvoy members need to know.

Marriott Starts Awarding Partial Elite Night Credits

As first reported by Loyalty Lobby, Marriott Bonvoy has begun awarding partial elite night credits at several of its lower-cost and regionally focused brands — a change from its long-standing “all or nothing” approach.

Previously, stays at several of these budget Marriott brands required multiple nights to earn a single elite night credit. That meant a 1-night stay earned nothing, and even a 3-night stay could still result in just 1 elite night credit. For business travelers and road warriors who frequently stay just 1 night, those nights effectively went to waste. That’s now changed.

Marriott Bonvoy members will earn 0.5 elite night credits per night at the following brands:

  • City Express
  • Four Points Flex
  • Protea Hotels
  • Series by Marriott

Here’s how it breaks down in practice:

  • 1 night: 0.5 elite night credit
  • 2 nights: 1 elite night credit
  • 3 nights: 1.5 elite night credits
  • 4 nights: 2 elite night credits
  • 5 nights: 2.5 elite night credits

Importantly, this update does not change how points are earned — nightly rates and bonus structures remain the same. The only difference is that stays now count toward elite status instead of being ignored entirely if they fall short of a threshold.

Marriott currently operates several different elite night-earning models across its portfolio, so it’s possible that this partial-credit approach could eventually be expanded to additional brands. Protea, in particular, is notable, as it once earned full elite night credits before being reduced to fractional earning several years ago.

Hot Tip:

If you’re chasing Marriott Bonvoy elite status, these partial credits can add up quickly. Short 1-night stays that used to earn nothing may now be the difference between hitting (or missing) your next elite status tier.

Final Thoughts

Marriott is now awarding elite night credits for short stays at select brands, where 1-night stays in many instances previously earned nothing at all. While it’s not a sweeping overhaul, it’s a meaningful improvement that makes those quick overnight stays finally count toward status.

For travelers who move from city to city or rack up numerous short trips, this is a positive change for Marriott Bonvoy members.
