The hotel giant has announced that it has entered into a long-term licensing agreement with Sonder, bringing its apartment-style rooms under its umbrella. There’s much to go over about the new Marriott Bonvoy partnership, so let’s get right into the news!

Sonder Will Fully Join Marriott Bonvoy Next Year

Marriott Bonvoy has inked an agreement with Sonder, and the chain will rebrand to Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy. As such, Sonder will fully join the Marriott Bonvoy program in 2025.

However, approximately 200 Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy properties will be available for booking later this year. The Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy partnership will add 9,000 rooms to the program, with another 1,500 in the pipeline.

“We are excited about the addition of Sonder’s portfolio to our system, which will expand our portfolio of longer-stay accommodations in key markets around the world,” said Tim Grisius, Global Officer, M&A, Business Development and Real Estate, Marriott International.

“We look forward to welcoming Marriott Bonvoy members to our approximately 200 properties worldwide, creating new opportunities for guests to enjoy Marriott’s award-winning loyalty program,” said Francis Davidson, Co-Founder and CEO of Sonder.

About Sonder

Sonder was founded in 2014 and offers apartment-style lodging in 10 countries and 3 continents. Many Sonder hotels are in destinations where Marriott already has a significant presence, like Dubai, Los Angeles, and New York.

However, the Sonder partnership will see Marriott’s footprint grow in some lesser-served locations, like Megeve, France.

The company is more tech-oriented than your typical hotel chain and functions somewhat like a full-service hotel and a bed-and-breakfast. Many features are self-service, check-in, room requests, and even dinner recommendations, all done from an app on your phone.

Cash rates at Sonder properties are usually affordable. For instance, rates at Park House in Amsterdam start at just $119 a night.

Most interestingly, the Sonder partnership means you can earn and redeem points at these properties. It’s unclear how much stays will cost as Marriott no longer publishes an award chart, but we’ll keep an eye out and update this post when we know more.

Bottom Line:

Sonder won’t be Marriott’s only apartment-style brand. Last year, the chain launched Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, which feature private bedrooms, separate living rooms, full kitchens, and in-unit washers and dryers.

Final Thoughts

This is an interesting partnership that makes sense for Marriott. Sonder offers high-end apartment-like hotels in exciting locations, some of which will be new for Marriott. We look forward to learning more about the partnership in the coming months!
