The Mesa Homeowners Card, which allowed cardholders to earn rewards on mortgage payments with no annual fee, recently shut down without warning.

Launched in November 2024, the Austin-based startup spent the past year rolling out a series of enhancements to the card, including new airline and hotel transfer partners and elevated welcome offers.

Now, the product has been discontinued. This abrupt closure left cardholders are left with just 1 way to redeem any remaining rewards, and some cardholders received messages that their travel bookings may have been canceled.

Here’s everything you should know about this unfortunate news, including an update about your outstanding points balance.

Mesa Card Discontinued Immediately

Launched in November 2024, the Mesa card aimed to reward homeowners for their largest monthly expense.

The card offered a competitive value proposition, with a $0 annual fee and a rewards structure that was generous on both home-related expenses and everyday expenses. Cardholders could earn 1x points on a linked mortgage, capped at 100,000 points per year.

As of December 12, 2025, however, the Mesa card website states that “all Mesa Homeowners Card accounts are closed. All credit cards have been deactivated and you are no longer able to make any new purchases or earn Mesa Points.”

Cardholders were notified that their cards would stop working:

We are reaching out today to share the unfortunate news that, effective immediately, your Mesa Homeowners Card account will be closed. As such, your credit card will be deactivated and you will not be able to make any new purchases or earn Mesa Points. We will provide you with separate guidance with regards to your remaining Mesa Points balance. This account closure has nothing to do with your account standing and is not the result of any wrongdoing or any actions taken by you with regards to your account.

Current cardholders should switch their recurring payments to an alternative form of payment. Additionally, the company advises cardholders to ensure that all final balances are paid before the statement closing dates.

Although Mesa offered several transfer partners, cardholders can no longer move rewards to any of these loyalty programs. Instead, points can only be redeemed as a statement credit at a rate of 0.6 percent.

Was It Too Good To Be True?

After just over a year in operation, it’s reasonable to speculate that Mesa may not have generated enough revenue to sustain the level of rewards it offered cardholders.

The card’s business model closely resembled Bilt Rewards, which launched in 2021 as the first major rewards program for rent payments. Since then, Bilt has expanded well beyond housing costs, diversifying into dining, shopping, and lifestyle categories, and has confirmed that rewards on mortgage payments will arrive in early 2026.

It’s unclear what Bilt Rewards will offer on mortgages, particularly now that Mesa has exited the market entirely.

Another potential option is the Made Essential Visa Signature Preferred Card, which launched just last month. The card carries no annual fee and earns rewards on mortgage payments and related expenses; however, it does not offer transfer partners and values points at approximately 0.7 to 0.8 cents apiece.

Bottom Line:

A sudden, no-warning credit card shutdown is frustrating for consumers. Other alternatives for earning points on mortgage payments do exist, but they raise questions about whether applying for another card is worth the risk.

What About Point Redemptions and Balances?

Mesa has provided an updated FAQ on its website, answering some common questions. Points balances will be redeemed as statement credits automatically, used at 0.6 cents per point. Mesa has also confirmed that these accounts will be reported to the credit bureaus as “closed by issuer,” which could look negative on your credit report.

Cardholders can no longer earn points, and we have seen reports of cardholders attempting workarounds to send their points to Mesa’s transfer partners. This may not work for everyone.

Those who previously sent their points to transfer partners or redeemed points for travel have received messages that their trips may have been canceled. That may be an automated message, based on what we’ve seen, and you should confirm your trip directly with the airline or hotel to see if it’s still active. Many cardholders’ trips are still listed as confirmed, despite the messages from Mesa.

Hot Tip:

Upgraded Points reached out to Mesa directly last week to ask clarifying questions about what’s happening. So far, there’s been no response.

Final Thoughts

Mesa raised $9.2 million in initial funding in 2024 and scaled quickly — perhaps too quickly. For both travel rewards enthusiasts and homeowners looking to maximize mortgage payments, the Mesa card was an interesting product that has now vanished.
