Mistake fares are very uncommon, and we just found one that can take you from several U.S. cities to destinations across Europe this year for $1,062 and up on Lufthansa in business class. The dates on which the fare is available include peak summer vacation time and the December holidays.

This is a mistake fare, about 25% of what a full-price business class ticket would cost, so beware that the airline may not honor it. Do not make other nonrefundable bookings tied to those flights for about 2 weeks, which is a reasonable timeframe to ensure that Lufthansa will honor those tickets instead of canceling and refunding them.

Let’s see what this fare entails.

Mistake Fare Deal — Details

The deal was first reported by Thrifty Traveler in its email newsletter for subscribers. It can take you from several U.S. airports to several European destinations for prices ranging from $1,062 to around $1,400, about a quarter of the price you’d typically pay.

  • Class: Business
  • Airline: Lufthansa and Discover Airlines
  • Route: Dallas Fort Worth (DFW), Chicago-O’Hare (ORD), Miami (MIA), Philadelphia (PHL) to many destinations in Europe, including Copenhagen (CPH), Milan-Linate (LIN), Milan-Malpensa (MXP), Oslo (OSL), Rome (FCO), Stockholm (ARN), Amsterdam (AMS), Brussels (BRU) and back
  • Cost: $1,062 and up
  • Travel Dates: July 2025 to February 2026, depending on origin and destination

Go to Google Flights to explore dates and departure/destination cities. There are likely many more combinations that might yield the same or similar prices.

The transatlantic portion of the itineraries we’ve seen is on Lufthansa proper, except Philadelphia, where it’s on its leisure-focused subsidiary Discover Airlines. The connections in Europe may be on Lufthansa Group partners like Austrian Airlines.

These fares are Business Basic, which on Lufthansa means that they can’t be canceled for a refund or a voucher. (Unless the airline decides not to honor the mistake fare, in which case you would be refunded.) There are, however, no change fees should you want to move to a different date, although you would have to pay the fare difference. This could be substantial, since regular business fares on Lufthansa to Europe are on average $4,000 and up. If you want a fully refundable ticket, choose a business flexible fare, for about $700 more.

Also, note that the flights are currently scheduled to be operated by airplanes with an older business class in a 2-2-2 layout. Lufthansa has begun flying a vastly better business class in a 1-2-1 layout giving aisle access to all seats, but so far only on limited routes.

Hot Tip:

You can credit those Lufthansa flights to loyalty programs on partner airlines, like United MileagePlus or Air Canada Aeroplan.

Final Thoughts

Fair warning: Lufthansa may choose not to honor these award tickets, so do not plan on the trip actually happening until a couple of weeks after purchasing. That said, there are a vast number of possible combinations of dates, origins, and destinations you can play with. If you are willing to stomach a bit of uncertainty for some days, this is an exceptionally low price for a business class that’s a bit behind the times but still a great way to get to Europe.
