To make us all feel old, it’s Pokémon’s 30th anniversary this year.

Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) is commemorating the occasion with 3 new special liveries and inflight experiences.

One of the jets, a Boeing 787-9 named Pokémon Jet Green, will operate international routes, including to the U.S. More than just a cool paint job, these flights will offer a Pokémon experience as well.

Here’s everything you need to know.

ANA’s Special Pokémon Liveries

ANA has adorned its jets with Pokémon-themed livery since way back in 1998. After a break between 2016 and 2023, the Pokémon theme is back. Now, 3 new special designs will appear on ANA’s jets this year.

The first jet to take to the skies will be Pokémon Jet Red at the end of July, adorned with Pikachu and other fire-type Pokémon friends. This Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft, registered JA819A, will operate only domestic flights within Japan.

Pokémon Jet Red will be followed by Pokémon Jet Green, with a date yet to be specified. This time, a Boeing 787-9 registered JA923A, will fly to destinations on ANA‘s international route network. A quick check of FlightRadar24 shows this exact plane has recently flown to Honolulu (HNL), Seattle (SEA), and Vancouver (YVR) in North America.

The fun won’t just be limited to the planes’ exteriors; passengers will enjoy exclusive in-flight amenities and themed cabins. Commemorative stickers will be handed out during boarding on each of the 3 new Pokémon-themed jets. In the economy cabins of domestic flights and the economy and premium economy cabins of international flights, the same Pokémon that feature on the outside of the aircraft will appear on headrests and limited-edition cups.

A press release says a third livery, Pokémon Jet Blue, will be revealed soon.

Hot Tip:

ANA flies from its hub at Tokyo Haneda (HND) to 8 destinations in North America. Check out our guides for the best ways to book ANA business class and first class using points.

Final Thoughts

I’m sure I speak for many of us — whose childhoods were filled with many hours playing Pokémon on their Gameboys — when saying that ANA celebrating in this way brings back fond memories.

Not only are themed planes a great marketing play, but they also help airlines build a connection with their passengers. I’ll be in Japan at the end of July myself, so, with a bit of luck, I should have firsthand experience to share with you soon.
