It’s not often that airline programs make positive changes without mixing in a negative change or 2. Spirit Airlines is doing just that, however, improving benefits for Free Spirit members without making status harder to earn or increasing fees along the way.

In fact, part of this change includes eliminating fees. Yeah, we also were shocked to see an airline do that.

Here’s what travelers need to know about recent updates to Free Spirit and a temporary promotion to celebrate the updates.

New Benefits for Free Spirit Members

The Free Spirit program already has a lot to offer Spirit Airlines loyalists. On top of multiple ways to earn and redeem points, elite members get extra perks like the ability to pool points, same-day standby, choosing exit row seats at no cost, priority boarding, and higher earning rates on purchases.

However, Spirit is making things better, adding 2 additional benefits.

Previously, Free Spirit members were subject to redemption fees when redeeming Spirit points for award tickets less than 28 days before departure. That fee has gone away, making it cheaper to use your points for a redemption flight. Remember that Spirit award redemptions start at just 2,500 points.

Another new benefit applies specifically to those with Free Spirit Gold status. On top of bonus points, complimentary drinks and snacks, a pet fee waiver, and complimentary checked bags, you’ll now get complimentary Wi-Fi on Spirit Airlines flights. This benefit is available whenever Wi-Fi is offered on flights, subject to availability and service interruptions that sometimes occur in the air.

Hot Tip:

Numerous airlines are rolling out complimentary internet benefits. Who gets the free Wi-Fi on flights varies by airline, though. We’ve rounded them all up in our guide to airplane Wi-Fi policies and fees.

Temporary Promotion for 2x Earnings

Spirit is also running a promotion to coincide with these new benefits. If you book a Go Big or Go Comfy bundle by December 31, 2024, you’ll earn 2x points. Go Big bundles include the Big Front Seat, complimentary carry-on and checked baggage, priority boarding, inflight snacks (including alcoholic drinks), and complimentary Wi-Fi access. Go Comfy bundles include a blocked middle seat next to your aisle or window seat choice, checked and carry-on baggage, priority boarding, and a complimentary drink (but not alcoholic drinks).

Normally, Free Spirit members earn 6x points per $1 spent on flights and 12x points on ancillary purchases, such as baggage fees. However, those numbers can go as high as 10x on flights and 20x on ancillary purchases for Gold elite members. Doubling those points could really help you earn Spirit points quickly.

Eligible flights for this promotion run through December 31, 2025.

Final Thoughts

Free Spirit is adding benefits. In a true miracle for the airline industry, those perks aren’t coming with news that elite status is now more difficult to earn or increased fees elsewhere in the program. Gold elites now get complimentary Wi-Fi, and redemption fees are going away for all members.
