Just as I got into the groove of having the Apple Watch track my steps, my friends started talking about their rings. My curiosity was piqued, mainly because I knew no one had recently gotten engaged, and instead of diamonds, they were mentioning things like readiness scores and sleep debt. They were discussing the Oura Ring, a smart ring that tracks various health metrics to help improve your wellness, including sleep, heart health, movement, stress, blood pressure, metabolic health, and women’s cycles.

It seems that everyone is prioritizing wellness these days, whether through travel, work-life balance, family time, or various other aspects of life, and I didn’t want to be left out. However, the ring’s price seemed high. Did I really need to spend a few hundred dollars on a ring to monitor my heart rate?

When I discovered that the Platinum Card® from American Express offered a statement credit for an Oura Ring upon enrollment, I decided to give it a try. Here’s my experience with the Oura Ring 4 and my thoughts on whether it’s worth it.

How To Get the Oura Ring With the Amex Platinum Card Credit

Oura Ring 4 prices start at $349, but with the Amex Platinum card’s $200 Oura Ring statement credit brings the out-of-pocket cost to just $149.

Even better, rings were 30% off during Oura’s Black Friday sale, making the basic Oura Ring 4 in silver (the most affordable version) just $49 after the discount and Amex statement credit. I no longer have the Amex Platinum card, but a friend offered to use her card to get the ring for me during the sale. After taxes and fees, the discount, and the statement credit, my $349 Oura Ring cost a total of $66.43.

Bottom Line:

The Oura Ring 4 is available in 6 metal colors (Silver, Black, Stealth, Brushed Silver, Gold, and Rose Gold) and 4 ceramic colors (Midnight, Cloud, Tide, and Petal).

Getting the Oura Ring Credit

The credit is only valid for Oura Ring purchases on ouraring.com (not other retailers), so my friend first enrolled in the benefit via Amex and then headed to the Oura website to make a purchase.

The credit automatically appeared on her statement less than 48 hours later. It was even backdated to the date of purchase.

Keep in mind that the Amex Platinum card’s Oura Ring credit isn’t valid on Oura gift cards or split payments made through PayPal. All Oura purchases, including the Oura Ring and membership fees are HSA/FSA eligible.

Selecting the Oura Ring Size and Color

Although Oura provides a free sizing kit, I already had an idea of my size. I chatted with a friend about how the rings fit (fairly standard), and opted for a size 9. Oura suggests wearing the ring on your index finger, and luckily, my size gauge was spot on.

Color selection was simple. I already mix and match metals when it comes to rings, and I loved the rose gold color. However, when I realized the silver was the most affordable option, I picked that. I wasn’t sure if I’d even like it, so I opted for the lowest-priced color option. I could always upgrade later.

Oura Ring Subscription and Membership Costs

Since I got such a great deal on the ring, I don’t mind paying the $5.99 monthly cost (the first month was free). If I’m happy with the Oura Ring after several months, I might consider paying the annual membership fee of $69.99. If you don’t have a membership, you still get access to your sleep, readiness, and activity scores, but that’s it.

Hot Tip:

The $200 Oura credit on the Amex Platinum card only covers the cost of the ring. You can’t use it for membership costs or additional warranties. The Oura Ring credit is also not valid on Oura gift cards, and it won’t cover any payments split by PayPal.

Unboxing the Oura Ring 4 and Setting It Up

I was excited to start using my ring, but I wasn’t quite sure how to set it up properly. I started by taking it out of the box and setting it on the charger, which was a USB-C. Then, I downloaded the app and signed up for the free membership trial, following the directions to connect my ring to my phone via Bluetooth.

I soon realized not all the data would be available right away. For example, the sleep data would require 1 night of sleep, and some of the other scores, such as stress management and cycle health, would take a few weeks to understand my rhythms before they’d be available.

Oura Ring Review: My Experience

I’ve been wearing the Oura Ring 4 almost nonstop for about 3 weeks now, and I’m enjoying the experience.

Comfort and Wearability

As someone who already wears rings, I’m fairly accustomed to them, but it took a few nights for me to get comfortable sleeping with a ring on, as I usually remove all jewelry, including rings, before going to bed. I sometimes have to adjust it during workouts when I get sweaty, and it’ll be interesting to see if it feels sticky in the hot summer.

While I usually opt for comfort over style, the ring’s chunky look doesn’t align with my personal jewelry aesthetic. I love dainty, thin, and stackable rings, as opposed to larger pieces. The Oura Ring doesn’t quite fit in with the vibe.

Generally, though, I don’t think much about wearing the ring, and it’s fairly comfortable. The ring is waterproof, so I don’t have to remove it when swimming or showering.

Hot Tip:

The battery on my Oura Ring 4 lasts up to 8 days, so I charge it about once per week.

App Insights

The membership is key to getting the most out of the Oura Ring. Although it’s still calibrating some data, I find the sleep information the most useful. I know when I’ve had a bad night of sleep, but I’ve also realized, because of my low or fair restfulness score, that I was waking up a lot each night. I’m now considering taking magnesium supplements to help me stay asleep longer and fall asleep more quickly when I wake up at night. I was also surprised to see how a single glass of wine affected my body temperature and sleep score that night.

It was interesting to see how jet lag affected my metrics much more than I thought. You can tell the app not to track your data for a few nights, but I was curious to see how jet lag would impact my general health. The answer was that it was pretty terrible for me, lowering my sleep scores, general readiness scores, and increasing my stress for about a week.

I know that taking an overnight flight to Europe and sleeping for just 50 minutes isn’t ideal for my health, but seeing the data made me realize I need to take better care of myself before, during, and after international trips.

I also appreciate the activity counter, cycle tracking for women, and heart health (I never paid much attention to this before, but as I age, I think this is helpful info to understand). As the ring continues to calibrate my scores and data, I look forward to learning more about my body and its patterns, which will hopefully lead to better health, or at least increased awareness.

Upgraded Points Staff Experience With Oura Ring: Gen X vs. Gen Z

Michael Park, senior editor and content contributor for Upgraded Points, also got the Oura Ring during the Black Friday sale using the Amex Platinum card credit. He shared his experience with me, including the pros and cons of the Oura ring and whether he plans to continue using it.

I’m a millennial female, and Michael is a Gen X male, so I was also hoping to determine if people from younger generations, who might not be overly concerned about their overall health (yet), also benefited from wearing the Oura Ring, so McKay Moffitt, our deputy news features editor and a Gen Zer, weighed in.

Michael Park’s Gen X Perspective

When I got the Oura Ring, I thought I was getting a new gadget, not a new boss, but the wearable gizmo now commands my daily routine, from whether I walk, drive, or take the bus to when it’s time to brush my teeth and plump up my pillow.

First, the annoying things about the ring: It’s still sometimes intolerably chunky, especially for someone not used to wearing jewelry besides a wedding ring. Sleeping with such a clunky device on, which you have to wear to collect the sleep data, took a while to get used to.

Then, some of the insights are obvious: Turns out you tend to sleep less when you have little kids or share a room with someone who snores! Long travel tires you out! Are you sick? Your readiness score will probably go down.

But after the ring collects enough information about your routines, the value of the data becomes clear. It’s one thing to know you’re having trouble sleeping and not know what more you can do about it, especially if you’ve already had a lifetime of sleep issues. But it at least feels a lot more actionable to know exactly when and for how long you wake up each night, using that knowledge to connect your tossing and turning to movements of other people in the house.

Here’s another thing about the Oura Ring I came to appreciate from a male perspective. It’s fair to say a lot of men still feel the cultural need to push past the pain, ignore signs of tiredness or illness, and tough it out when their body starts crying out for help — even if doing so potentially means long-term health issues and makes them ornery and harder for their family and friends to be around.

With Oura, though, it’s not feelings, it’s data. Instead of treating their bodies like feelings-riddled flesh bags to be worked to the bone, they can now care for them like finely tuned race cars they want to ensure make it to the finish line in one piece.

So am I glad I got the Oura Ring? Surprisingly, for someone who thought he’d ditch it in a drawer a week or 2 in, yes. Will it help me live an extra 10 years? Who knows? But will I try more diligently to live longer? According to my new boss, the Oura Ring, the data points say yes.

McKay Moffitt’s Gen Z Perspective

I’d been eyeing an Oura Ring forever, and the Amex Platinum card’s credit was definitely my final push. I’ve loved it. I think I would’ve gotten it regardless, but the $200 off helped.

I use it mostly for tracking sleep and workouts, including sleep debt, but sometimes I don’t like how honest it is. Over the holidays, my sleep debt was so high, it actually predicted me getting sick 2 days prior to it happening. In the past, I’ve been very guilty of the “push through” mindset, but the ring doesn’t let me do that guilt-free anymore.

Final Thoughts: Is The Oura Ring Worth It?

I’ll be honest: Without the Amex Platinum card’s $200 credit, I probably would have never bought the Oura Ring.

However, I’m glad I did, and I can definitely see myself paying the membership and using the ring to monitor my overall health for the foreseeable future. In fact, I see the ring as a stepping stone to all sorts of health-tracking devices that people will begin to wear in years to come, and I look forward to seeing how the Oura Ring’s technology and comfort evolve (making the ring skinnier would be a game-changer for me).

If you’re hoping to focus on health and wellness for 2026, consider using the Amex Platinum card’s $200 credit toward the Oura Ring.
