After 9 long years, it’s once again possible to redeem your AAdvantage miles for Hawaiian Airlines flights between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii.

Sure, other options exist, but the reason this is such good news is the wide-open award space currently available on these routes. It’s also good news when you consider how easy it can be to amass American Airlines miles.

Here’s what you should know.

Using AAdvantage Miles for Hawaiian Airlines’ Mainland Flights

In 2015, a new restriction meant you could only redeem AAdvantage miles for Hawaiian Airlines flights within Hawaii — not flights from places like Los Angeles (LAX), Austin (AUS), or New York City (JFK). However, that’s no longer the case, as first reported by View From the Wing.

Now, you can redeem your AA miles for these flights again. Even better, award space is excellent in both economy and first class on flights from the West Coast. You’ll pay 55,000 miles per person in first class or as little as 22,500 miles each in economy.

From the East Coast, business class is impossible to find. However, economy awards on Hawaiian Airlines are available on a fair number of dates for 35,000 miles apiece.

American Airlines‘ own flights may be cheaper on many of these dates. However, they’re also more expensive on some dates, due to the airline’s use of dynamic pricing for its own flights. That hasn’t typically applied to awards on partner flights. Having options is always a good thing.

Given how easy it is to earn American Airlines miles — plus the comfort of Hawaiian Airlines’ premium seats — this is good news for award travel.

Hot Tip:

You have many options for flying to Hawaii with points and miles. Options include all of the major alliances and numerous points programs. Your best option will vary based on where you live in the U.S.

Final Thoughts

It’s once again possible to redeem your American Airlines miles for flights on Hawaiian Airlines beyond just flying between Hawaiian islands. Now, you can use your miles for flights from the 48 continental states, giving you extra options for using your miles and which airline you’ll fly on when the trip arrives.

If you’ve got AA miles, it’s time to start choosing your preferred island.
