Update:

Spirit Airlines has stopped flying. The airline says it will provide refunds to those who booked with a credit or debit card. The information below can still be helpful if you booked another way, such as a voucher, or don’t get an automatic refund.

If you have a Spirit Airlines flight booked — whether it’s tomorrow morning or 6 months from now — there’s a pretty good chance you’ve spent today refreshing news sites and checking the Spirit app to see if your flight is still showing up.

Reports started swirling on May 1, 2026, that Spirit is preparing to shut down operations as soon as tonight after a federal bailout fell through, and travelers are understandably nervous.

The big question on most folks’ minds isn’t really about the airline. It’s about their wallet.

If Spirit stops flying, what happens to the money you already paid for those tickets? Do you just kiss it goodbye, or is there a path to getting it back? Let’s walk through what we know, what we don’t, and what you can do right now to protect yourself.

The Rumors: Spirit Shutting as Soon as Tonight

Here’s the short version.

Spirit had been working on a $500 million rescue financing deal backed by the federal government, but talks hit an impasse this week as a spike in fuel costs pushed the airline’s already shaky finances over the edge. The Wall Street Journal reported that Spirit is preparing to shut down, and Trump administration officials have reportedly been told a shutdown could come within 24 hours.

President Trump said his team had given Spirit a “final proposal” and that a decision could come Friday or Saturday. Spirit, for its part, is publicly saying it’s “operating as usual.”

In short, nobody outside of a handful of executives and lenders actually knows whether Spirit will be flying on Saturday morning. But the writing on the wall is hard to ignore.

What Happens to Your Ticket — and How To Get Your Money Back

If Spirit stops flying, do not expect a tidy refund process from the airline. In a liquidation scenario, airline-issued refunds are unlikely to materialize anytime soon — if at all.

Travel credits and future-flight vouchers are even worse off, since they sit at the back of the line behind secured creditors in bankruptcy proceedings. For example, I have a Spirit credit from a booking I canceled recently, and this is unsecured debt. That means I’m at the end of the line for getting my money back.

Filing a claim with the bankruptcy trustee is technically an option, but past airline collapses have shown that unsecured creditors (which is what passengers are) often recover only pennies on the dollar, if anything, and the process can drag on for 1 to 2 years.

Your best move is your credit card. If you paid with a credit card, you can file a chargeback under the Fair Credit Billing Act for services not delivered. Card issuers generally treat airline collapses favorably, and you typically have 60 days from the statement that listed the charge to dispute it (though many issuers waive that window for canceled flights since you could not have known this would happen in advance).

Paid with a debit card? Your protections are weaker, and you may end up in line with the bankruptcy creditors.

Travel insurance is another path, though only if your policy specifically includes “financial default” coverage and was purchased within 10 to 14 days of your initial trip deposit. And this won’t help if you bought the insurance directly from Spirit. Check the fine print before assuming you’re covered.

What about Plan B? Spirit has very limited interline agreements, so don’t count on another airline picking up your itinerary. If you absolutely need to be somewhere, start pricing a backup ticket on another carrier now. Booking last-minute when half the country is doing the same thing is a recipe for paying more.

Bottom Line:

If Spirit shuts down, you should contact your credit card company as soon as possible — the one whose card you used to buy the ticket. Say you want to do a chargeback against the purchase because the merchant filed to provide what you purchased. Be ready with receipts and confirmation numbers.

Final Thoughts

To be clear, none of this is guaranteed. Spirit may yet land a deal, and your flights may take off without a hiccup.

But the smart play is to act like a shutdown is possible, given everything we’re hearing. Pull up your booking, confirm you paid with a credit card, screenshot your itinerary and receipts, and start sketching out a Plan B.

If Spirit pulls through, you’ve lost nothing. If it doesn’t, you’ll be miles ahead of the passengers who waited to find out.
