Previously, holding an IHG credit card could give you elite status automatically but couldn’t get you 1 night closer to the next tier. That all changed on October 1, 2026, when IHG and Chase unveiled a major refresh of the IHG credit card lineup.

Now, annual Elite Night Credits have become part of the benefits package on all 4 credit cards — the 3 personal cards and the 1 small-business card. Plus, holding more than 1 card can create stacking opportunities to provide more Elite Night Credits as a jump-start to higher status tiers.

By putting the right cards together, you can start each year with as many as 50 Elite Night Credits toward IHG One Rewards elite status. Here’s how it works.

IHG One Rewards Elite Status Requirements

Earning IHG One Rewards elite status requires earning qualifying points or Elite Night Credits. Spending 1 night at an IHG One Rewards-participating hotel gives you 1 Elite Night Credit, for example.

Reaching IHG’s elite tiers requires the following:

  • Silver Elite: 10 nights
  • Gold Elite: 20 nights or 40,000 points
  • Platinum Elite: 40 nights or 60,000 points
  • Diamond Elite: 70 nights or 120,000 points

Earned status is valid through the end of the following calendar year.

Points from purchases on IHG credit cards aren’t elite-qualifying points, so card spending alone never counted toward these thresholds. However, Elite Night Credits do. Each ENC is treated as a qualifying night, just like a night spent at a hotel when you pay cash or redeem points.

Elite Night Credits on Each IHG Credit Card

All 4 IHG credit cards offer some level of automatic elite status and Elite Night Credits deposited into your IHG One Rewards account annually:

The ENCs are deposited automatically at the start of each year. For the first deposit, timing depends on when you opened the credit card account.

Accounts opened on or after the October 1, 2026, update to these cards receive their ENCs at account opening. Existing cardholders get their first deposit in January 2027.

How To Stack IHG Elite Night Credits

Until now, travelers have been able to hold the IHG Business card and 1 personal IHG credit card. The ENCs from both land in the same IHG One Rewards account each year. By holding the IHG Business card and IHG Premier Select card, the same person can receive 35 ENCs — putting them halfway to Diamond Elite — and start the year with automatic Platinum Elite status.

However, there’s a way to do even better for 2027.

Through the start of 2027, existing IHG cardholders can apply for the IHG Premier Select card, earn its welcome offer bonus, and get its ENC deposit. In this scenario, you start the year with 50 Elite Night Credits.

Stacking the ENCs looks like this:

*This requires opening an IHG Premier Select card account during the limited-time window through early in the first quarter of 2027, on top of having an existing IHG personal credit card.

Starting the year with 50 ENCs puts you just 20 nights away from IHG’s top-tier Diamond Elite status. Starting the year with 35 ENCs puts you halfway to that goal.

Earning More Elite Night Credits Through Spending

The 3 cards with an annual fee — the IHG Premier card, IHG Premier Select card, and IHG Business card — offer ENCs through ongoing spending:

  • 2 ENCs for every $5,000 spent on the IHG Premier card, IHG Premier Select card, or IHG Business card
  • 5 bonus ENCs after spending $15,000 in a calendar year on the IHG Premier card or IHG Premier Select card
  • 5 bonus ENCs after spending $25,000 in a calendar year on the IHG Business card

Spending is tracked separately on each card. That means spending $2,500 on one of these cards and $2,500 on another won’t add up to the $5,000 threshold that earns 2 ENCs.

It’s also possible to reach a higher status tier purely from spending on your card:

Why ENCs Matter More Than Automatic Elite Status

Status that comes just from holding a credit card is nice. It’s easy. You automatically qualify for the benefits offered at that tier.

However, that automatic status doesn’t give you any of IHG’s Milestone Rewards benefits.

Those perks are tied to earning elite nights. IHG awards a Milestone Reward every 10 nights from 20 through 100, with 2 selections at 40 and 70 nights, and Elite Night Credits from credit cards count toward this perk just like nights earned from hotel stays.

The IHG Premier Select card’s 20 ENC benefit triggers the 20-night reward on its own. Here, you get a choice of 5,000 bonus points, 2 Food & Beverage Rewards worth up to $20 each, or a confirmable suite upgrade. Start a year with 50 credits and you pass the 20-, 30-, 40-, and 50-night milestones right away. That’s 5 reward selections before logging a single night at a hotel, and the 40-night options include 10,000 bonus points, a confirmable suite upgrade, and an annual lounge membership.

After reaching a milestone, members have 90 days to choose their preferred reward. Otherwise, it’s forfeited. Unfortunately, rollover ENCs from the previous year don’t count toward Milestone Rewards, only toward status qualification.

Final Thoughts

Stacking the Elite Night Credits from IHG’s credit cards isn’t free. The cards that provide the most ENCs have the highest annual fees. Holding the IHG Premier Select card and IHG Business card together now costs $550 annually. Add the IHG Premier card into the mix and you have $700 in annual fees. Each card offers an anniversary free night and other ongoing perks, but the price tag climbs the more cards you hold.

The strategy of holding multiple IHG credit cards and stacking the ENCs can make sense for IHG-loyal travelers who want to shortcut their way to higher status tiers and unlock additional Milestone Rewards choices.

For anyone who has an IHG credit card already, there’s a small window in which you can get another, earn a bunch of points from its welcome offer, and get 50 ENCs to jump-start your status.
