One year after launching, the TAP Miles&Go American Express® Card from Cardless is out with a new bonus offer to celebrate.

This is the only co-branded card in the U.S. market for Portuguese airline TAP, and it earns miles in TAP’s Miles&Go loyalty program.

Through October 31, new TAP Miles&Go Amex cardholders can earn 58,000 bonus miles after spending $2,500 in the first 90 days after being approved for the card. For perspective, that’s enough miles for a round-trip flight to Europe in economy class.

Let’s look at more details on this card, and who could benefit from having it.

Overview of the TAP Miles&Go Amex Card

The card was launched last year and is issued by fintech company Cardless.

The TAP Miles&Go Amex card comes with an annual fee. But at $79 per year, this is at the lower end of the scale for airline co-branded cards.

Cardholders receive 3x miles per $1 spent on TAP Air Portugal purchases, 2x miles on ride-share services, hotels, and car rentals, and 1x miles on all other purchases.

For that $79 annual fee, you get benefits including preferred boarding, 2 TAP Premium Lounge access passes per year at Lisbon airport, and 2 extra checked bags per year.

The card can also help as a fast track to TAP Miles&Go status. Cardholders earn 1 Status Mile for every 5 miles earned from spending, up to 10,000 miles per year.

TAP Portugal status translates to status in Star Alliance, which could be interesting for U.S. flyers since Star includes United Airlines.

Where Does TAP Fly?

For a relatively small airline, TAP has a vast international network, especially to destinations in former Portuguese colonies. Connecting on TAP via its hub in Lisbon (LIS) to Africa is appealing for passengers based in the U.S., which does not have many direct flights to African cities.

In North America, TAP serves 9 airports from Lisbon: Boston (BOS), Chicago-O’Hare (ORD), New York-Kennedy (JFK), Newark (EWR), Washington-Dulles (IAD), Miami (MIA), San Francisco (SFO), Toronto (YYZ), and Montreal (YUL). From Oporto (OPO), it flies to Newark (EWR).

Its long-haul flights are on a modern fleet of Airbus A330s and A321neos equipped with lie-flat business class.

Is the TAP Miles&Go Amex Card Worth It?

If you fly frequently between the U.S. and Portugal, or connect on TAP to Europe and Africa, this card could be worth considering.

The only major transfer partners of TAP Miles&Go are currently Capital One miles, Bilt Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy. If you want to earn TAP miles, this card will do that for you more easily than transfering credit card points.

Hot Tip:

TAP is a member of Star Alliance, as is United Airlines. If you are based in the U.S. and fly TAP only occasionally, you may find it more convenient to earn United’s MileagePlus miles on its flights instead of TAP’s own. Check out the best ways to earn lots of United MileagePlus miles for a primer on how to do that.

But if you’re in the market for a travel rewards card, the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit CardInformation collected independently. Not reviewed by Capital One., the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit CardInformation collected independently. Not reviewed by Capital One., or the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit CardInformation collected independently. Not reviewed by Capital One. are all far better picks, as you can transfer your miles to a 1:1 ratio to TAP.

But how about redeeming TAP Air Portugal miles? The airline makes it easy by using a distance-based award chart, not dynamic pricing. From North America to mainland Portugal, Europe and North Africa, award seats are 100,000 miles in business class.

Final Thoughts

The TAP Miles&Go Amex card is aimed pretty specifically at people who fly on TAP Air Portugal; most others would be better served by a travel card with transferable points.

But if you are a frequent TAP passenger, or are looking at using points for an award seat on its long-haul network, this offer might pique your interest.
