TAP Air Portugal has quite a few different fare types, and the checked allowance depends on these fare types and the flight route.

TAP has a fairly standard checked and carry-on allowance for economy passengers but a generous allowance for Executive Class passengers, with 2 pieces of carry-on and up to 3 x 70 pound (32 kg) checked bags. Unfortunately, the additional carry-on does not apply to flights to/from North America.

TAP Air Portugal Carry-On Allowance

1 personal item: Free
Standard carry-on bag:

  • Economy: 1 Free
  • Executive Class: 2 Free*

* For flights to/from North America, Executive Class passengers may only bring 1 standard carry-on.

Size and Weight Restrictions

  • Personal: 4.5 pounds (2 kg) and 16 x 12 x 5 inches (40 x 30 x 15 cm)

*For flights to/from destinations in South America, economy passengers may bring a standard carry-on weighing up to 22 pounds (10 kg).

If a passenger exceeds the permitted carry-on allowance, then they will be charged the applicable checked bag fee plus a gate handling fee of €90 (~$105) for European flights and €120/$145 for international flights.

Lap Infant Carry-On Policy

  • Passengers traveling with an infant may carry onboard infant food required for the flight and other indispensable items must be carried in the adult’s carry-on. A collapsible buggy may also be carried onboard.

Stroller Check Policy

  • Passengers may check a stroller, car seat, or basket. Passengers traveling on a Basic, Classic, Plus, Executive, or Top Executive fare can also check a 22 pound (10 kg) bag for an infant.

TAP Air Portugal Checked Baggage Allowance

Individual checked bags may not exceed maximum linear dimensions of 62 inches (158 cm). Checked bags for Executive or Top Executive fares may weigh up to 70 pounds (32 kg) per item and all other fares, no more than 50 pounds (23 kg).

I would like to buy a ticket for Tap Air, from Budapest to Lisbon, date 18/1/21. I need confirmation about checked luggage, how many kg can I check in with my ticket without any charge? I saw there 1 check-in around 158cm. 23kg. Is this included with the fare?

Please reply to me as early as you can. I am waiting for your reply.

I have a ticket from IAD to Lisbon, with a stay in Lisbon for one week, then I fly from Lisbon to Barcelona to stay three weeks and return from, BCN to IAD. I am a US Citizen. I see that we can only necessary travel can be done during Covid19, and my trip is for tourism. I also see Spain is not allowing any flights from Portugal.

Please let me know what your policy is to get my payment back?
My trip was booked to leave IAD on May 2, 2021, and borders are closed. Thank you.

  3. I want to buy a ticket from Italy to Canada. I have one carry on (8kg), one checked bag (23 kg), and also one guitar.
Will I have to pay extra for any luggage or for the guitar?

    Reply

    • Hi Ali,

You should not be charged anything for your carry-on bag or checked bag, but you will need to pay an extra baggage fee for your guitar amounting to around $85.

    • Hi Abdel,

Bringing each of those items should be fine as long as they are each under their respective weight allowances. Safe travels!

  5. I have a flight from Casablanca to Prague, and I need my laptop on me at all times, especially since I will be adhering to a connection flight. Can I have a backpack to put my laptop in? Though it will inevitably be above 2kg of the personal item, and will be around 4kg. Can I do that regardless and pay for the extra kilos in the airport? If not, will I at least be able to put the laptop in my 8kg carry-on and have it on board so it’s with me?

  6. I bought a TAP Portugal ticket from IAD->LIS->WAW with a “DISCOUNT” fare and on their website under “WHAT’S INCLUDED” it says only:

    Hand baggage
    On board service
    Digital Kiosk
    Seat reservation

Could there be no allowance for a standard roller suitcase?

    Thank you!

    Reply

    • Hi Rob,

If your roller suitcase is the size of a carry-on/hand baggage then that is part of your allowance. If it is the size of a standard checked bag then you would need to pay extra for that.

Thanks – I don’t see the option for adding a checked back and was worried that the “Discount” fare won’t even allow me to pay for an extra bag. Do you know if I can only do that at check-in (which looks like I can only do 2 days before the departure.)

  9. Hiya! I am flying Jetblue from RDU to Newark and then TAP from Newark to Lisbon to Stockholm. I have a box (a painting) that is 204 cm total (95x95x14) and 15kg in weight. Can a box like this be checked in as oversized luggage?

  10. I’m going to Lisbon from Stockholm. I’ve already purchased and paid for 2x23kgs. Can I take 1 more bag with 15kgs? How much would that cost?
What would the overweight fee be for the 23kg bag?

    Reply

    • Hi Noor,

For your route, a 3rd bag should be 85 euros. If one of your bags is over 23 kg, but under 32 kg, then you would need to pay a 50 euro overweight fee. Safe travels!
