A new luxury points hotel has opened in Asia. The Thompson Shanghai Expo is the brand’s first in the Asia Pacific region, and, aside from its luxury rooms, high-end dining, and short distance to Shanghai Expo Culture Park, it’s a steal if you book with World of Hyatt points.

Let’s take a look.

Thompson Brand Debuts in Asia Pacific

Thompson Shanghai Expo has 254 guest rooms and suites. All have floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the city or the Huangpu River.

Thompson Hotels are known for a casual — yet luxurious — vibe in its rooms and amenity spaces, and it’s no different here. The brand, known for its high-end food and beverage options, spared no expense at the Thompson Shanghai Expo.

The hotel offers 3 dining options, including an indoor-outdoor restaurant, an all-day restaurant serving Chinese cuisine, and a rooftop restaurant and bar. Other amenities include a concierge, a fitness center, and a pool.

Thompson Shanghai Expo is in a pretty central location, so it’ll be easy to get around.

A convention center is just steps from the hotel, while a museum, restaurants, and shopping are just a few minutes walk. The hotel is steps from Shanghai Expo Culture Park, and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is just a 40-minute drive, making it easier to connect to your flight.

Thompson Shanghai Expo is the brand’s first foray in the Asia Pacific region. Thompson has 18 hotels open worldwide in destinations such as Austin and New York, among others.

Hot Tip:

World of Hyatt members can earn 500 bonus points for qualifying nights at Thompson Shanghai Expo through January 31, 2026.

How To Book Thompson Shanghai Expo

Thompson Shanghai Expo is now open for guests. The hotel participates in the World of Hyatt loyalty program, so you can earn and redeem World of Hyatt points for stays.

We’re seeing cash rates starting at around $180 per night, which is quite reasonable for an expensive city like Shanghai.

But if you want to get even more value, save your cash. Thompson Shanghai Expo is a Category 3 hotel. That means rates start at 9,000 points on off-peak nights, 12,000 points on standard nights, and 15,000 points per night on peak nights.

That’s right, you can pay just 9,000 points per night for a stay here

But there’s another reason why the Thompson Shanghai Expo is an excellent deal: you can use a Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate here. If you aren’t aware, you can earn these certificates by participating in the Brand Explorer program, staying 30 nights or earning 50,000 base points in a calendar year at Hyatt hotels, or having one of the best Hyatt credit cards

Simply put, this is one of the best deals for a high-end Hyatt hotel in Shanghai. For context, Alila Shanghai and Park Hyatt Shanghai are both luxury Hyatt hotels. But because they are Category 5 hotels, you wouldn’t be able to apply a free night certificate for either hotel.

Final Thoughts

It’s not every day that we see a luxury hotel starting at under 10,000 points per night, so we’re highly impressed by the new Thompson Shanghai Expo. The hotel is a fantastic sweet spot for Hyatt loyalists who want to use points or a free-night certificate on a high-end stay.
