The author visited as an invited guest of Universal Orlando Resort. All opinions are the author’s own, and Universal Orlando Resort had no input in any part of this review.

It’s been nearly 25 years since a major U.S. theme park opened, and I just got a sneak peek at Universal Epic Universe, Universal’s most ambitious park yet.

It’s not even fully open yet — but based on what I’ve seen during technical rehearsals, Epic Universe is already setting a new standard for theme parks.

If you’re planning a visit to this game-changing park in Orlando, Florida, there are a few things that you should know to make your experience that much better.

Let’s take a look at some tips that I am making sure my friends and family know before stepping through the Chronos portal.

Get to the Park Early

It’s no surprise that the highly anticipated opening of Epic Universe will draw big crowds, but even without considering the lines, the park’s size will be a challenge to explore in a single visit.

My top tip is to prioritize high-demand attractions early.

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry Epic
The queue for Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is so nice that it feels like an attraction by itself.

Without a doubt, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is going to draw the biggest crowds, so getting in the (absolutely stunning) queue as early as possible will set you up for success. Since this attraction will not accept Universal Express Pass, the only way to get on is to wait in line or get a VIP tour.

Once you have experienced that attraction, you should still have the entire day ahead of you to explore the other worlds.

Stay at Universal’s On-Site Hotels for Exclusive Benefits

One of the best perks of staying at a Universal hotel is the Early Park Admission, which is included for all guests.

That means if you are staying at an official hotel, like Helios Grand Hotel, you can enter Epic Universe up to 1 hour before the general public.

Since no hotels will include a complimentary Express Pass for Epic Universe, this is the best way to get on your favorite rides before the park fills up.

Hot Tip:

Helios Grand Hotel has a dedicated entrance for guests to enter directly into the park, making your commute even easier.

Prepare for Limited Shade — Especially in Celestial Park

One common complaint I heard during my visit (and which I agreed with) was that there is very little shade, especially in Celestial Park.

Epic Universe Celestial Park bench
Celestial Park is big and beautiful…but hot.

Yes, there are some pockets of shade around trees and buildings throughout the different worlds, but be prepared to get a lot of sun. Since the worlds are not interconnected, guests need to walk through Celestial Park each time they want to explore a new portal. The steps and sun will take a toll.

I visited in April, and while it was hot, it was nothing compared to summer in Orlando. Guests should be prepared, do their best to stay hydrated, and wear sunscreen and hats on a sunny day.

If You’re Prone to Motion Sickness, Choose Your Rides Wisely

There is no sugar-coating this one. There are rides that will ruin some peoples’ day.

Epic Universe Stardust Racers coaster
Stardust Racers is not for those with weak stomachs.

Epic Universe has some great rides, and many of them are high-tech rides with screens and simulators or intense roller coasters.

If Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry or Stardust Racers is on your to-do list and you are sensitive to motion, packing some motion bands, patches, or Dramamine might be a good idea.

Be Prepared To Be Surprised

I walked into Epic Universe, convinced that SUPER NINTENDO WORLD was going to be my favorite world. It was not.

Epic Universe Isle of Berk
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk.

Not because it wasn’t everything I expected it to be (it’s awesome, don’t skip it), but because the other worlds absolutely blew me away — which I wasn’t expecting.

From the stunning streets of 1920s Paris to the stone walls of Darkmoor Village, I found myself in awe of the details and levels of immersion I felt walking through each portal.

The biggest surprises for me were how much I loved spending time in How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, how fast Stardust Racers is, and how good the food is in each world.

Hot Tip:

There are so many characters walking around the park; don’t miss the photo ops!

Final Thoughts

Universal Epic Universe is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious theme parks ever built — and the media preview made that crystal clear.

With jaw-dropping worlds, incredibly well-done rides (for all ages), and some epic eats, big crowds are expected. Having a smart strategy can make all the difference and even save you a headache (or motion sickness) when you visit Epic Universe.
