In 2023, the partnership between Hyatt and MGM came to an end, and a new collaboration between Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards was introduced.

The partnership provides some reciprocal benefits for Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards members, such as the ability to earn and redeem Marriott points at 17 MGM Resorts, including approximately 40,000 rooms.

Today, a new benefit has emerged between the 2 hotel brands, as Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards have announced that members can now transfer points between their programs.

Let’s see if this new option for transferring points between MGM Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy is worthwhile.

Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards Transfer Ratio at 1:0.8

While it’s always great to be able to easily transfer points between travel reward programs, you should always review the transfer rate to see whether it makes sense to do so.

As of today, members who have linked their Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards accounts can now transfer points between the 2 programs.

Members have the ability to transfer points in either direction at a ratio of 1:0.8. For example, for every 1,000 Marriott Bonvoy points you transfer, you will receive 800 MGM Rewards points and vice versa.

It is important to highlight a few essential terms if you decide to transfer between the 2 programs:

  • A minimum of 1,000 points can be transferred, with a maximum transfer limit of 30,000 points per calendar year.
  • Points can only be transferred between accounts that belong to the same member; however, combining Marriott Bonvoy points between different members’ accounts is always permitted.
  • Transfers can be conducted via the online transfer platforms of Marriott Bonvoy or MGM Rewards.

Is It Worth It?

MGM Rewards points can be redeemed for 1 cent apiece toward various expenses with MGM, including dining and the hotel folio. Given that Marriott Bonvoy points can be transferred into MGM Rewards points at a 1:0.8 ratio, this implies a potential value of 0.8 cents per Bonvoy point for MGM spending.

We value Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.7 cents each, making the transfer from Marriott Bonvoy to MGM Rewards a reasonable option. Conversely, points also can be transferred from MGM Rewards to Marriott Bonvoy. If you have a significant amount of MGM Rewards points and no intentions of visiting MGM properties in Las Vegas or elsewhere in the U.S., this could be a great chance to maximize the value of your Marriott Bonvoy points.

Nevertheless, considering Marriott’s massive portofilo of over 7,500 hotels worldwide where you can redeem Marriott Bonvoy points, we personally prefer to use our Marriott Bonvoy points for stays with Marriott.

Hot Tip:

Points can now be transferred between Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards accounts at a ratio of 1:0.8. The ability to obtain reasonable value from a hotel redemption through point transfers exists, yet the annual transfer limit of 30,000 points significantly restricts this new benefit.

Final Thoughts

You can now move points between Marriott Bonvoy and MGM Rewards at a rate of 10:8 in both directions. You can transfer a minium of 1,000 points at a time and no more than 30,000 points in a single year.

Even though we probably won’t take advantage of this new transfer option, it could be useful in certain situations — like if you have a lot of points in one program and are traveling to a place that has quality hotels from the other program.
