Hot Tip:

Although this policy might actually speed up the security process, you can breathe a sigh of relief. This idea was just an April Fools’ Day joke!

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced today that passengers traveling through U.S. airports will soon be required to use clear bags for all carry-on items at security checkpoints.

With security lines among travelers’ top complaints, the agency says this initiative will speed up screening lines, reduce manual bag checks, and improve overall checkpoint efficiency as travel demand continues to rise.

The pilot program will be rolled out at some of the country’s busiest airports this summer before expanding nationwide in 2027.

Let’s take a look at the details.

‘Clear Bag’ Requirements Coming to TSA

On April 1, 2026, TSA announced the Transparent Screening Initiative (TSI), which will require passengers to use clear carry-on bags when passing through airport security.

With TSA lines making headlines, this pilot program hopes to streamline the screening process, similar to security at major stadiums and sporting events.

TSA officials said that the new requirement would allow officers to quickly identify prohibited items without opening bags or sending them for secondary screenings.

Passengers at the following airports will have 90 days to adjust to the new rules, which will go into effect this summer:

TSA agents will issue warnings instead of penalties during the transition period. Passengers without clear bags may need to transfer items into temporary transparent bags provided at the checkpoint.

Some agents are looking forward to the change.

“Look, we’re tired. Every day it’s the same thing, people digging through backpacks, pulling out laptops, arguing about water bottles. If we could just see everything in the bag from the start, it would make everyone’s life easier, including the passengers. This works for stadiums, so why not airports?”

According to internal TSA testing, clear bags reduced manual bag checks by nearly 40% during simulated screening exercises, helping officers move passengers through checkpoints faster during peak travel times.

Where To Buy Clear Carry-on Bags

If the Transparent Screening Initiative moves forward, travelers will soon need to upgrade their carry-on bags to meet the new requirements.

Fortunately, several luggage brands have announced plans to meet demand.

Some popular options include:

  • Away “The Carry-On Clear”
  • Samsonite “Checkpoint Ready Collection”
  • Travelpro “Crew Transparent Series”

If you’re interested, order soon, as inventory is limited. For example, Urban Outfitters has already sold out of the Crash Baggage Share Medium Transparent Luggage.

Hot Tip:

To address privacy concerns, Away is reportedly testing “Privacy Packing Cubes,” removable inserts that conceal the contents of your bag once you’ve cleared security.

Final Thoughts

While the idea of requiring fully transparent bags at TSA might actually speed up the security process, you can breathe a sigh of relief. This is just a joke as part of our annual April Fools’ Day tradition here at Upgraded Points, and we are hugely appreciative of everything that TSA officers do to keep air travel safe.

Your opaque carry-ons are safe, for now.
