All good things must come to an end — and that’s unfortunately what’s happened with one of our favorite sweet-spot domestic award redemptions.

Turkish Airlines’ Miles&Smiles program has long provided excellent award rates on domestic Star Alliance flights with United Airlines, especially those to Hawaii. However, a no-notice devaluation has sent those once-fantastic rates soaring, effectively eliminating the sweet spot.

Here’s what you need to know.

Turkish Miles&Smiles Raises Award Prices on Domestic Flights

As reported by Loyalty Lobby, Turkish Airlines’ Miles&Smiles program has devalued its award rates for U.S. domestic Star Alliance flights, including those to/from Hawaii, with certain awards seeing price increases of nearly 200%.

Here’s a look at the new rates for U.S. mainland domestic and Hawaii flights booked through Miles&Smiles (rates displayed are one-way):

As you can see, Miles&Smiles previously treated all flights within the U.S., even those to or from Hawaii, as the same for award-pricing purposes. Now, however, it’s established different (and much more expensive) rates for flights between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland.

Before this devaluation, the award rates for Hawaii flights were genuinely one of the best sweet-spot redemptions you could make — provided you could find the availability in the first place. Now, without notice, that opportunity is gone.

Adding insult to injury, the award rates for U.S. mainland flights have jumped 50% across the board. Taken together, this devaluation leaves the Miles&Smiles program with not much utility for flights within the U.S. in the eyes of most award travelers.

Thankfully, the program maintains a respectable list of transfer partners, including Bilt Rewards, Capital One miles, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy, so if there’s a redemption you want to make, it’s relatively easy to earn Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles miles.

Leveraging Turkish Airlines’ Miles&Smiles program for domestic flights (especially to and from Hawaii) used to be one of the best deals around, but that opportunity no longer exists.

Devaluations are an unfortunate reality in the points-and-miles world, but this one is especially brutal, especially because Turkish Airlines provided no advance warning of these changes.
