If you have an Uber One membership or a card that provides credit for one, pay attention.

In the “coming weeks,” Uber One will be making changes to its program, most notably reducing ride reward rates from 6% to 5%.

Credits will still be redeemable for future Uber rides and Uber Eats orders, but this is a devaluation worth noting.

Let’s take a look at the details.

Uber One Decreases Earning Rates to 5%

In the coming weeks, Uber One members will see a reduction in the amount of rewards they earn on eligible rides. Currently, members earn 6%, which will soon drop to 5%.

Members are receiving emails with updates to the program that state:

We’re always looking for new ways to improve Uber One, evolving what we offer based on what members value most. We’re making a few updates and want to share what’s changing.

In the coming weeks, eligible rides will start earning 5% Uber One credits instead of 6%. Credits can continue to be used on future rides and Uber Eats orders.

We’ve also recently introduced new member benefits that let you:

  • Share your membership with family: Add one additional adult and teens from your household at no extra cost, so they can enjoy Uber One benefits too.
  • Travel abroad with your benefits: Membership benefits apply in 45+ countries where Uber One is available.
  • Unlock savings on hotels: Earn 10% Uber One credits on hotel bookings through Uber and get up to 20% off stays at select properties.

You’ll continue to get Uber One benefits including $0 Delivery Fee on eligible orders, Surge Savings on eligible rides, and other exclusive member benefits.

While sharing the membership with family is nice, Uber One members who use the app a lot likely won’t find the new benefits worth the 17% loss in rewards, which makes this just another example in a long list of recent devaluations.

Uber One Benefits

Uber One is a paid membership that offers additional perks and discounts on Uber rides and Uber Eats orders for $9.99 per month, or $96 per year.

Uber One membership includes:

  • $0 delivery fee on food, grocery, and other orders when they meet a minimum spending requirement
  • 5% back in Uber Cash on Uber rides (was 6%)
  • 10% discount on select delivery and pick-up orders
  • Discounts on rides during surge periods
  • 10% Uber One credits when renting a car through Uber
  • Exclusive members-only offers and promos

Those with the Platinum Card® from American Express in their wallet can offset those costs thanks to the Uber One statement credit worth up to $120 annually.

Final Thoughts

Uber just announced changes to its Uber One program, and while the company is spinning it as an improvement with new benefits, most users will see it as a devaluation.

The 1% reduction in the earning rate (from 6% to 5%) may seem like a small adjustment, but it will likely be quite noticeable to heavy Uber users. Fortunately, readers with the Amex Platinum card can avoid paying for Uber One, which makes this change slightly less painful.
