Being rebooked on a much later flight is frustrating, especially when you know there may be earlier options available. A new United Airlines app feature could make it easier to get on an earlier flight without risking your confirmed seat.

Let’s look at how it could help the next time your United travel plans are disrupted.

United’s App Will Monitor Earlier Flights for You

United is rolling out a new app feature designed to help travelers affected by disruptions find an earlier way to their destination.

If the airline rebooks you on a later flight after a disruption, you can now add yourself to the standby list for up to 3 earlier departures to the same destination through the United Airlines app (iOSAndroid). From there, United monitors those flights in the background. If a seat becomes available, you’ll receive a text message and can decide whether you want to switch.

The biggest benefit is that you keep your confirmed reservation while waiting. You won’t give up that seat unless you choose to move to an earlier flight.

The process works in 3 steps:

  • Join the standby list for up to 3 earlier flights.
  • Wait while United checks those flights for an available seat.
  • If you receive a text that a seat has opened, decide whether you want to switch.

The feature is arriving just before the busy Labor Day travel period. United expects more than 3.4 million passengers to fly with the airline between September 3 and 8, 2026 — about 300,000 more than during the same period last year.

It also joins a growing list of self-service tools in the United app. Travelers can already use the app to rebook disrupted trips, receive eligible meal and hotel vouchers, sign up for CLEAR+, and view estimated TSA security wait times.

Hot Tip:

United has put a lot of effort into improving its mobile app, and it has become one of the most robust airline apps available. Check out our guide to some of the latest flyer-friendly features added to the United app, including real-time boarding updates, lounge recommendations, and improved bag tracking.

Final Thoughts

No one wants to be rebooked on a much later flight, and United’s latest app feature could give disrupted travelers more options for earlier departures.

Being able to join the standby list for up to 3 earlier flights — without giving up your confirmed seat — gives travelers more chances to get to their destination sooner. Since United monitors those flights for you, there’s no need to keep refreshing the app or waiting in line for an agent.
