United’s most premium aircraft is about to pick up a new home base. The airline has confirmed that its Boeing 787-9 with the new Elevated interior will begin flying out of Houston at the end of October, adding a fourth city to the rollout.

The Elevated Boeing 787-9, Caviar and All

The Elevated Boeing 787-9 is the most premium-heavy plane United has ever put in the air, with 99 premium seats up front. That count includes 8 Polaris Studio suites, 56 standard Polaris suites, and 35 Premium Plus seats, leaving just 123 economy seats (39 of them Economy Plus) in the back.

Nearly everything is new.

Standard Polaris suites now have sliding privacy doors, 19-inch 4K OLED screens, wireless charging, and Saks Fifth Avenue bedding. The Polaris Studio takes it further: It’s a business-class-plus product that’s about 25% larger than a regular suite, offering a 27-inch 4K OLED screen, an ottoman that lets you dine with a companion, Ossetra caviar, and Laurent-Perrier Champagne.

Studio access costs an extra $499 each way.

Even economy seats get 13-inch 4K OLED screens, which United says are the largest in the world for the cabin, plus free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members.

The first Elevated plane entered service on April 22 on UA1 from San Francisco to Singapore, followed by San Francisco to London on April 30. The debut wasn’t smooth.

United’s first Elevated 787-9 was pulled from the schedule in June after weeks of operational problems, including cancellations and passenger-free ferry flights, and the aircraft was sent back to a Boeing facility in Moses Lake, Washington. United never disclosed the exact cause, and observers noted it appeared to be more than a routine cabin defect.

The good news for travelers is that the airline’s other Elevated 787-9s have kept flying their San Francisco routes without the same trouble, and more deliveries are due before the end of the year.

New Houston Routes With Elevated Aircraft

Starting in late October, Houston becomes the next hub for the Elevated 787-9. United will run the aircraft on 3 routes out of George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) beginning October 24:

Houston to Sao Paulo (GRU)
Houston to Tokyo Narita (NRT)
Houston to Sydney (SYD)

A fourth route, Houston to London Heathrow (LHR), follows on January 5.

That gives Houston flyers a range of long-haul options to try the new Polaris and Polaris Studio products, from an overnight to South America to an ultra-long-haul across the Pacific.

The plane is already flying out of San Francisco to Singapore and London, so between the 2 hubs, your odds of booking onto an Elevated cabin keep climbing as United takes delivery of more aircraft.

United’s Elevated Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner stumbled out of the gate, but the product itself is one of the strongest premium cabins a U.S. carrier has ever offered.

With Houston joining San Francisco this fall, more travelers will get a shot at those sliding doors, giant screens, and caviar service. If the reliability holds up, United’s bet on a premium-heavy wide-body could pay off nicely.
