Letting your airline elite status slip can feel like watching all those hard-earned perks vanish overnight. But if you fly with United Airlines, you might not have to accept that outcome just yet.

Some MileagePlus members have managed to keep their status by doing something surprisingly simple: asking for an extension.

Here’s what you should know if you want to try extending your United elite status.

How Some MileagePlus Members Are Extending Their Elite Status

United doesn’t publicly list a way to extend elite status, but that hasn’t stopped some MileagePlus members from seeking to keep their hard-earned status. How? By simply reaching out and asking.

Travelers who recently lost their United MileagePlus elite status on February 1 have had some success contacting MileagePlus through customer service or the United app. Many explain why their travel looked different than usual, whether that was due to personal matters, health issues, job changes, or other circumstances that cut back their flying.

There isn’t a published playbook on what works and what doesn’t, and approvals aren’t guaranteed. However, there are reports of some members asking United to extend their elite status due to a change in travel patterns and receiving a paid option to buy back status. Those hoping for a goodwill extension have had better luck by declining and politely restating their request.

It also helps if you have a solid track record with United in prior years. Members who have held status for multiple years may present a stronger case, so framing your request around your long-term loyalty and future travel plans — especially if you have upcoming reservations in your United account right now — can reinforce that you’re still a valuable customer.

Timing can matter, too. Reaching out soon after your status drops — rather than months later — may improve your chances. For the airline, your recent activity is still top of mind.

From the airline’s perspective, keeping a proven frequent flyer can make more sense than losing one. And for some MileagePlus members, that has worked in their favor.

Hot Tip:

While there’s no guarantee that United will extend your soon-to-expire elite status, there’s no harm in asking. If you’re going to ask, be specific. A short, clear explanation of why your recent travel looked different than usual — and your intent to fly more going forward — can help your case.

Final Thoughts

There’s no guarantee, and not every request will be approved. Still, for United flyers who narrowly missed requalifying, a simple ask could be the difference between losing perks and keeping them for another year. If your status just dropped, it may be worth a quick message before you assume it’s gone for good.
