United Airlines is doubling down on its effort to attract its competitor’s most valuable frequent flyers. The Chicago-based carrier has announced an extension of its status match promotion after an enthusiastic response from travelers — now valid until October 22.

The offer, which targets elite members of its 2 biggest competitors, gives eligible travelers an opportunity to experience United’s MileagePlus program.

Additionally, United has made significant progress on its fleet-wide Starlink Wi-Fi rollout and wants you to know where things stand. The airline has introduced a Starlink Tracker tool that will let customers know if Starlink is on their upcoming flight.

Here’s everything you need to know about these updates.

United Extending ‘Switch to Better Wi-Fi’ Status Match Until October 22

Earlier this month, United introduced a premier “Switch to Better Wi-Fi” status match offer for  Delta SkyMiles Medallion and American Airlines AAdvantage elite members.

The promotion allowed eligible members to request a corresponding status level in the United MileagePlus program. Now, United has announced that the status match will be extended until October 22, 2026.

Applications are available here.

The offer was introduced after a rather public debate over in-flight internet. United has begun rolling out Starlink satellite Wi-Fi across its fleet. Meanwhile, Delta has selected Amazon’s Leo satellite network for its next-generation connectivity service, though that won’t even roll out until 2028.

The status match promotion sent a clear message: Travelers dissatisfied with their current airline’s connectivity or loyalty benefits have an incentive to consider United Airlines instead.

Under the promotion, approved customers initially received Premier status for 90 days. Members could then retain their matched status through January 31, 2028, after meeting qualifying spending and flying requirements.

According to United, the status match campaign was a major success, as the airline received a 10x increase in daily status match applications.

United’s status match promotion garnered a lot of attention, and rightfully so. Now, the airline is letting you know all about it the concept behind it.

Starlink Wi-Fi has made a massive impact on the travel industry and is a worthwhile experience for millions of United customers.

According to United, Starlink connectivity is live on more than 635 United aircraft and on nearly half of its daily departures — more than any airline in the world. United is installing Starlink on about 20 aircraft per week and plans to complete installations by the end of 2027.

United has now launched a Starlink Tracker tool to help customers check whether Starlink connectivity is available on their upcoming flight. The tool was created largely in response to customer demand.

With the Starlink Tracker tool, visitors can:

  • Check whether an upcoming flight has Starlink: Enter travel dates and flight numbers within 3 days of departure, with real-time updates for last-minute aircraft changes.
  • Follow the Starlink rollout: See how many United aircraft and daily departures have Starlink.
  • Explore installations by aircraft: See how many regional, narrow-body, and wide-body airplanes have Starlink onboard.
  • View availability by hub: See the percentage of Starlink flights in Chicago (ORD), Newark (EWR), Washington, D.C. (IAD), San Francisco (SFO), Los Angeles (LAX), Houston (IAH), and Denver (DEN).

United will also notify customers when their flight is scheduled to offer Starlink via preflight emails, text notifications, the flight status page in the United app, onboard announcements, and inflight signage.

What This All Means for United Customers

United is making a major push, and many frequent travelers will benefit from it. The extension of the status match through October 22 is a big deal for those who may have missed out on the earlier deadline. For frequent travelers, status matches provide a relatively low-risk way to test another airline.

Premier status can provide valuable benefits, including priority boarding, preferred seating, free baggage, and the possibility of seat upgrades — though it all depends on your status level, itinerary, and availability. For travelers who already have United flights planned, the status match challenge may provide a practical opportunity to try out these benefits.

Of course, passengers should carefully review the qualification requirements before switching loyalty. The qualification thresholds are quite substantial, and travelers who don’t meet the requirements within the 90-day timeframe risk losing their matched status.

As for the Starlink Tracker tool, travelers can now easily check whether their upcoming flight will have free high-speed connectivity. United is making significant progress with its fleetwide Starlink rollout, with several new aircraft being equipped each week.

Final Thoughts

United is doubling down on its status match promotion, extending the offer until October 22 in response to strong demand.

The status match campaign has highlighted how airlines are increasingly competing for frequent flyers through a combination of loyalty incentives and onboard technology. The strong interest clearly suggests that many customers are willing to reconsider their airline of choice when better onboard internet is a factor.

United has also introduced a new Starlink Tracker tool, letting customers can check whether Starlink connectivity is available on their upcoming flight and explore stats about the fleetwide Starlink rollout.
