United Airlines has given its Guam (GUM) base a big upgrade, completing the transition of the fleet from dated Boeing 737-800s to state-of-the-art 737 MAX 8 aircraft ahead of schedule.

Even better, the airline has already equipped 2 of these aircraft with Starlink, and there are more retrofits to come. Here’s everything you should know about this exciting update.

United has shared a couple of very exciting updates for its Guam-based fleet of aircraft. The airline planned to replace the South-Pacific base’s Boeing 737-800 fleet with much newer 737 MAX 8 jets, but it completed that process earlier than originally anticipated.

Coinciding with this news is the fact that the airline has also begun installing high-speed Starlink inflight Wi-Fi on its 737 MAX 8 fleet. Two of the first MAX jets to get Starlink are based in Guam, which means flyers in the region will enjoy a vastly superior flight experience compared to before. The old 737s that operated from the Guam base had no Wi-Fi connection to speak of.

In addition to Starlink, these 737 MAX 8 aircraft offer inflight entertainment screens at every seat, USB charging, Bluetooth connectivity, roomier overhead luggage bins, and more extra-legroom economy seating.

United says it’s also made improvements to its space at Guam’s Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, introducing the latest check-in kiosks and a new layout to reduce congestion for flyers.

The Chicago-based carrier has an extensive regional network from the South Pacific island territory, serving 15 destinations nonstop with its 737 MAX 8 fleet, including major destinations like Manila (MNL), Nagoya (NGO), Osaka (KIX), Taipei (TPE), Tokyo (HND and NRT), and more. Guam is also one end of United’s famous Island Hopper service, which connects it with Honolulu (HNL) and several destinations in Micronesia and the Marshall Islands along the way.

The 737 MAX 8 now operates all narrow-body flights from Guam, and Starlink will continue to be added to more aircraft at the base as United makes more progress on retrofitting the entire aircraft type. So while not every MAX flight from Guam has Starlink right now, more and more routes will see it in the upcoming weeks and months.

Final Thoughts

United flyers based in Guam (and anyone traveling to or through the territory) are getting a big upgrade with the transition to the new Boeing 737 MAX 8, two of which already have Starlink inflight Wi-Fi. The blazing-fast Wi-Fi will be coming to the entire Guam-based fleet in due time. That will be a night-and-day difference for flyers in the region, who haven’t had Wi-Fi on 737 flights in the Pacific before now.
