MileagePlus pooling has become a popular way for United flyers to combine miles with family and friends, but the feature has come with a significant restriction since its debut.

Now, United has quietly made a major improvement, removing one of the biggest limitations of pooled MileagePlus miles.

Here’s what changed and why it matters.

United Now Allows Pooled MileagePlus Miles for Partner Award Flights

In early 2024, United Airlines introduced mileage pooling for MileagePlus members. With this benefit, members could pool their miles with friends and family members.

With the benefit, up to 5 MileagePlus members could pool their miles into a single shared account, which could then be redeemed for award travel on behalf of anyone, whether they were part of the pool or not. This feature made it easier for families and groups of friends to merge smaller mileage balances and reach redemption thresholds more quickly.

Though it was a welcome addition at the time, it came with several limitations the biggest being that pooled miles could only be redeemed for award travel on United or United Express. That is, until now.

United has quietly expanded the pooling feature to include partner airlines.

Now, United will allow its members to pool miles with up to 5 other people and book travel on United’s more than 40 partners, including Star Alliance and non-alliance airlines.

What This Change Means for MileagePlus Members

For MileagePlus members, the change is a meaningful improvement. The pooling feature was already a convenient way to combine miles with family and friends, but the addition of partner airline redemptions unlocks a much broader range of award opportunities across United’s global network of Star Alliance and partner carriers.

Best of all, United introduced this added benefit without taking away any existing perks. This is a welcome change from the trend seen across many airline loyalty programs recently, where new features often come at the expense of existing member benefits.

However, there are still a few important details to keep in mind. United’s award pricing and award availability are based on the status and eligible credit cards of the MileagePlus account that completes the booking.

Final Thoughts

United has improved its MileagePlus pooling feature, allowing members to redeem pooled miles for travel on United’s partner airlines. At a time when many airline loyalty programs are making their rewards less valuable, it’s refreshing to see United introduce a change that gives members more flexibility and utility from their miles.
