Earlier this year, United announced that it would be launching several new routes, including flights to Mongolia and Greenland. So far, only Greenland has gone on sale, but it hasn’t been bookable with United miles, only cash or partner awards. Now, award bookings on United’s website have gone live.

Let’s take a look at using your United miles to fly to Greenland.

Booking Greenland Flights With United Miles

United’s new Greenland flight will depart from Newark (EWR) to Nuuk, Greenland (GOH). Starting in June 2025, United will offer twice-weekly service between the two cities. The biggest catch? It’s pretty expensive, even when booking economy.

While passengers have been able to book these flights using cash, to date United’s website hasn’t offered an opportunity to redeem MileagePlus miles. Instead, United’s website has errored out when searching for mileage redemptions.

However, as we pointed out a couple of weeks ago, you can still book these flights using your Air Canada Aeroplan points.

There are 2 negatives to wrestle with here. First, 35,000 points one-way for a 4-hour economy flight is pretty expensive — even if the cash rate is high. And Aeroplan isn’t showing any premium cabin award space, either. That seems to be reserved for United.

Now that United has begun offering award bookings to Greenland, we can get a real look at how much it’ll cost. Anyone hoping for a more affordable ticket should probably sit down at this point.

Oof. Economy pricing isn’t that bad, relatively speaking, since it’s only 10,000 more miles than you’d be paying with Aeroplan.

If you want to redeem United miles (or you aren’t sure you’ll actually make your flights), United could be a good option, especially since you won’t pay any cancellation fees for your flight.

But take a look at that “premium economy” pricing! Rather than selling business class on this international flight, United is operating the 737 MAX, which is only equipped with domestic first class seats. That means United is selling them as premium economy instead.

Now, we know that United has been doing its best to degrade the value of its miles with no-notice devaluations and upcharges for partner flights, but wow. 120,000 miles for a 4-hour flight in a recliner seat? That’s bleak, even for United.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

United members can finally book flights to Greenland using their MileagePlus miles. While economy class seats are slightly more than partners are charing, they also come with the added benefit of free cancellations. Conversely, “premium economy” seats have astronomically high pricing and should be avoided at all costs.
