Get your kilts at the ready — bonny wee Scotland is getting put back on the map.

United has confirmed it will be restarting its nonstop seasonal services to Scotland from the U.S. as of March 4, 2022.

“We are delighted to return to Scotland in 2022 and resume nonstop services from Edinburgh to the United States,” said Bob Schumacher, U.K. and Ireland Director of Sales for United.

The route resumption will see the return of nonstop flights to Edinburgh (EDI) from 3 American cities: Chicago (ORD), Newark (EWR), and Washington, D.C. (IAD).

The U.S. and Scotland Connected Once Again

United Airlines will be the first airline to restart nonstop flights to Scotland since ties were cut due to the effects of the pandemic.

“It’s incredibly exciting to be resuming our transatlantic services with United to allow direct travel between Scotland and the USA for the first time in two years,” said Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport. “It will allow families to reunite, friends to reconnect, and re-open the strong tourism destinations on both sides of the Atlantic.”

Daily flights to Edinburgh from Newark (EWR) will start on March 4, 2022, and from Chicago (ORD) and Washington, D.C. (IAD) on March 6, 2022.

The schedule for each of the routes is as follows:

  • Depart Newark 8:20 p.m. — Arrive Edinburgh 8:05 a.m. (+1)
  • Depart Edinburgh 9:40 a.m — Arrive Newark 12:20 p.m.
  • Depart Chicago 6:15 p.m. — Arrive Edinburgh 7:50 (+1)
  • Depart Edinburgh 11:30 a.m. — Arrive Chicago 1:55 p.m.
  • Depart Washington, D.C. 10:25 p.m. — Arrive Edinburgh 10:40 a.m. (+1)
  • Depart Edinburgh 12:30 p.m. — Washington, D.C. 3:10 p.m.

Each of the routes will be operated by one of United’s Boeing 757 aircraft. These narrow-body aircraft are smaller than what you might expect on transatlantic flights.

Down the back, there are 108 regular economy seats and 45 economy plus seats in a 3-3 layout.

For a significantly more comfortable hop across the pond, passengers can choose from 16 fully-flat, Polaris business class seats.

Tickets won’t come cheap — the lowest round-trip fare from Newark to Edinburgh we’re seeing available isn’t until October 2022 and comes in at $726.

Alternatively, there are round-trip MileagePlus redemptions available in economy from 27,300 miles + $5.60, or for those who prefer a little more comfort when they travel, from 116,700 miles + $5.60 in business class.

Hot Tip: If your dates are flexible, make sure to search on united.com by clicking Book with miles. Once your results populate, click View 30 day calendar where you can advance through the calendar to see the best redemption price by departure date.

Final Thoughts

One of the most beautiful countries in the world will soon only be a nonstop flight away from Chicago, Newark, and Washington, D.C.

Thanks to United, nonstop flights to Edinburgh will once again be a possibility for those looking for a unique vacation.
