In case you haven’t heard, United Airlines is duking it out with American Airlines for supremacy in the Windy City.

While the dust may have settled — at least for now — in the battle for gate space and flight volume at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), United is making another play for Chicago-area flyers with its latest status match promotion.

Here’s a look at all of the details.

Shortcut to United Elite Status for Chicagoland Residents

United Airlines is offering a new status match for residents of Chicagoland (i.e., the city of Chicago and its suburbs).

If you have a Chicago metro area address stored in your MileagePlus account and elite status with another major airline, register by September 30, 2026, to match your status to the corresponding level in the MileagePlus program for 120 days after taking 1 eligible flight to or from Chicago O’Hare within 90 days of registration — or if you’ve taken a qualifying flight within the previous 30 days.

This promotion differs from typical United status matches in that it requires only 2 qualifying United or United Express flights during the challenge period, instead of the usual 5.

The number of Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs) remains the same as the carrier’s typical status match promotions, but in this promo, PQPs earned from credit card spend count toward the required thresholds.

Here are the PQP requirements for each level of United elite status:

  • Premier Silver: 1,700
  • Premier Gold: 3,400
  • Premier Platinum: 5,000
  • Premier 1K: 7,500

As a reminder, you earn 1 PQP for every $20 spent on most United co-branded credit cards, but you’ll earn 1 PQP for every $15 spent on the United Club℠ Card and United Club℠ Business Card.

Meeting the flight and PQP requirements will get you elite status through all of 2027.

Here are some more terms and conditions you should be aware of:

  • You’re not eligible for this promotion if you’ve participated in a United status match or challenge within the last 3 years or have received a status exception within the last 5 years.
  • You must reside in the Chicago metro area and have that address listed in your MileagePlus account. However, United doesn’t specify what counts as the Chicago metro area in the terms of this offer.
  • Matched elite status will reflect in your MileagePlus account within 5 to 7 days of taking the “activating” flight taken that’s required within 90 days of registration.
  • This promotion is only valid for United and United Express flights.
  • Status earned in 2026 is valid through January 2028. If you earn the status after January 1, 2027, it will be valid through January 2029.

Final Thoughts

This is an interesting status match promotion from United for Chicago-area flyers. If you meet the residency requirement and have elite status with another airline, this is certainly worth considering, especially given the reduced flight requirements.
