It’s never been easier to fly from The Bay Area to Mexico.

Volaris, a Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier, launched a new nonstop service from Oakland, California (OAK), to Monterrey (MTY) on November 14 and announced Zacatecas as an additional new service starting in summer 2025.

This takes the airline’s number of nonstop services from Oakland to Mexico to 7.

Here are the details of Volaris’ expansion at Oakland.

Volaris Is Oakland’s Biggest Operator of Flights to Mexico

You can now fly nonstop from Oakland (OAK) to the bustling business city of Monterrey with Volaris.

The service operates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with the following very reasonable flight times:

  • Depart Oakland (OAK) at 1:55 p.m. and arrive in Monterrey (MTY) at 6:45 p.m.
  • Depart Monterrey (MTY) at 9:35 a.m. and arrive in Oakland (OAK) at 12:25 p.m.

What’s more, the flights are priced reasonably, with round-trips starting at just $127 for the almost 4-hour flight.

Given Volaris’ status as a low-cost airline, factor in additional fees for checked bags and in-flight drinks and snacks as you consider pricing for your flights.

Hot Tip:

As for Zacatecas, the newly announced route will take off for the first time on July 2, 2025, and continue to operate with a thrice-weekly frequency on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays with the following schedule:

  • Depart Oakland (OAK) at 1:10 p.m. and arrive in Zacatecas (ZCL) at 5:36 p.m.
  • Depart Zacatecas (ZCL) at 9:01 a.m. and arrive in Oakland (OAK) at 11:40 a.m.

Once the Zacatecas route takes off next summer, Volaris will further solidify its position as the airline offering the most flights from Oakland to Mexico.

Its route network connects Oakland with Guadalajara (GDL), Leon (BJX), Mexico City (MEX), Morelia (MLM), and San José del Cabo (SJD), as well as Monterrey and yet-to-launch Zacatecas.

Volaris’ choice of Oakland — rather than nearby San Francisco (SFO) — is obvious: lower operating costs for the airline.

The carrier also serves San Jose (SJC), a city just south of San Francisco, with nonstop flights to 4 cities in Mexico.

Final Thoughts

Volaris is filling a gap in the market by connecting Oakland with more of Mexico than any other airline.

This is great news for those wishing to travel to Mexico as tourists but also for the huge number of Mexicans who call California home. Volaris’ pricing model makes these flights attractive for numerous people, and the expansion is a sign that the concept is working.
