1. A New State Park Established

The land in this area was reserved for military use in 1866. In 1922, it was designated a state park.

2. Original People of the Park

Deception Pass State Park was once home to several tribes, including the Samish and Swinomish tribes. Research shows these tribes were some of the area’s earliest inhabitants. Today, the park continues to honor their legacy.

3. What’s in a Name

This area of Washington was initially explored by Captain Salvador Fidalgo of Spain in 1792. Many places in the park, such as Rosario Beach and Fidalgo Island, are named after his Spanish heritage. While Fidalgo was exploring the area, another captain named George Vancouver from England also explored the same region. Vancouver believed that the pass was located at the mouth of the river, but his lieutenant later discovered that the adjacent land was actually an island. The island was named after this lieutenant, Joseph Whidbey, and the narrow waterway was named the Deception Pass, as it had deceived Vancouver.
