Preferred Hotels & Resorts is one of the world’s largest independent hotel brands. The brand has hundreds of luxury hotels in some of the world’s most sought-after destinations, including Tokyo, Santorini, and Rome.

It’s a brand you may not be familiar with, even if you’ve seen or stayed in some of its hotels. But what you may not know is that some of these hotels can be booked with Choice Privileges points — and they’re some of the best ways to use Choice points.

Let’s go over the best properties in the Preferred Hotels & Resorts collection that deliver the best value, and how to book them with Choice points.

Using Points To Book Preferred Hotels & Resorts

Choice Privileges

Select hotels can be booked via Choice Privileges, Choice Hotels’ loyalty program. It’s an underrated way to book luxury hotels, particularly boutique hotels, with points that are easy to earn. You can search directly with Choice Hotels, but not all Preferred hotels appear in search results (only about 375 hotels participate).

Choice is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards and Capital One Miles at a 1:1 ratio, and of Wells Fargo Rewards at a 1:2 ratio. Choice is also a Citi ThankYou Rewards partner, but beginning April 19, 2026, its transfer ratio will devalue from 1:2 to 1:1.5.

While Choice doesn’t use an award chart, many redemptions — even at high-end properties — top out at around 35,000 points per night. That isn’t the case for Preferred Hotels & Resorts properties. As you’ll see later on, there’s a wide range of prices for Preferred properties, with the least expensive starting at 20,000 points, and the most expensive starting at 150,000 points.

I Prefer

Preferred Hotels & Resorts offers its own I Prefer loyalty program, which earns points on paid stays and offers elite benefits. You can transfer rewards from Capital One Miles at a 1:2 ratio or Citi ThankYou Rewards at a 1:4 ratio (1:2 starting April 19, 2026). However, redemption pricing can vary widely and is typically less favorable than booking through Choice Privileges at participating properties.

The 10 Best Preferred Hotels & Resorts To Book With Points

All award reservations are for standard rooms and based on single or double occupancy. Plus, you can double-dip in benefits: when you enroll in I Prefer, you’ll receive additional benefits, such as early check-in, late checkout, and room upgrades.

Hot Tip:

Not all Preferred Hotels & Resorts properties are bookable with both Choice Privileges and I Prefer points. Even when they are, pricing can vary significantly, and Choice points may offer better value.

1. Virgin Hotels New York

First on this list is a personal favorite: Virgin Hotels New York. The 40-story hotel is a popular stay in Manhattan’s bustling NoMad neighborhood.

The hotel offers 460 guest rooms and suites, some with private terraces, and all offering skyline views. Amenities include 4 dining options, including a Michelin-starred Colombian fine-dining restaurant, an outdoor pool with sweeping views, a spa with a Pilates studio, and a fitness center.

  • I Prefer points required: Property not available
  • Average cash rate: About $500 per night
  • Average points value: 1.0 cents per Choice point

2. Peter Island Resort, British Virgin Islands

The next property on this list is also the most expensive — and exclusive — option. Peter Island Resort, located in the British Virgin Islands, is set on a 1,800-acre private island. The resort has 52 guest rooms, suites, and villas, including some with their own pools.

There are 5 beaches, several swimming pools, 2 restaurants, a 10,000-square-foot spa, and water sports. The resort is just a 30-minute boat ride from Tortola, so you shouldn’t have trouble getting around if you’re flying in from the continental U.S. or taking a ferry from the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The hotel, located in a 16th-century palace, offers 82 guest rooms and suites, plus an outdoor swimming pool, several dining options, a spa, and a gym. Its location in one of Lisbon’s poshest neighborhoods means you can enjoy all the city has to offer, from food and museums to easy access to public transit.

  • I Prefer points required: Rates vary*
  • Average cash rate: About $380 per night

* For I Prefer rates at select properties, there does not appear to be a set number of points required. In some searches, full award pricing was not displayed because the searching account did not have enough points, and in those instances, only cash + points prices were displayed.

6. Huntley Santa Monica Beach, California

Another boutique hotel on the list, the 204-room Huntley Santa Monica Beach is a solid choice for travelers who want a mix of good amenities and access to tourist attractions. You’ll get both here.

Final Thoughts

Preferred Hotels & Resorts is a brand that may not get much shine, especially over larger brands like Marriott or Hilton. But its partnership with Choice Privileges shouldn’t be overlooked. Choice points are incredibly easy to earn, and, in turn, they unlock amazing redemptions that may otherwise be inaccessible.

If you have some Choice points lying around, or you want to transfer points from a program like Amex or Citi, consider checking out a Preferred Hotels & Resorts property.
