I moved to Houston for the first time in the early 2000s, and one of my favorite weekend escapes was a 3-hour drive away in Austin. Many a weekend trip or holiday break was spent there, soaking up amazing barbecue and exploring the Hill Country outdoors. The Hyatt Regency Austin became my family’s de facto home away from home in Austin for over 20 years. Its prime position on Lady Bird Lake makes it a great base for exploring the city.

The property completed a comprehensive renovation in November 2025, and when my husband and I found ourselves with a kid-free weekend over Valentine’s Day 2026, I immediately started planning a memorable weekend in Austin that would include one of our favorite Hyatt Regency properties. I’ll review how I booked the hotel, the type of room you might expect, the dining options and amenities, and how the vibe is after the refresh.

Booking Hyatt Regency Austin

For Valentine’s Day weekend, rates for a 2 Queen Beds room at the Hyatt Regency Austin were around $318 per night pretax, excluding a $28 daily destination fee. The same room in this Category 4 hotel could be booked with 15,000 World of Hyatt points per standard night. Considering the total after taxes and fees, the points were worth about 2.8 cents apiece, well above our value of World of Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each.

The daily destination fee is meant to cover:

  • 1 Capital Cruises water activity rental per stay, including paddleboard, canoe, or kayak (single or double)
  • 2 daily passes to Umlauf Sculpture Garden + Museum
  • The ability to borrow essentials such as picnic baskets and blankets, kites, and games
  • A Chef’s Signature Cookie at Juniper Breeze Market
  • An in-person daily bat briefing
  • A beverage at check-in
  • Premium internet access
  • Bottled water at the front desk

I booked with points, so I did not have to pay the destination fee, but I should have received the benefits. Unfortunately, none of these benefits were disclosed to us at check-in. We were offered a glass of prosecco when we checked in and given 2 bottles of water, but nothing further about the fee or what it covered was reviewed with us or offered.

I also used a Guest of Honor award for this stay, entitling me to Globalist benefits. We were upgraded to a 1 King Bed Lake View room, which averaged $477 per night pretax. We also received complimentary parking (otherwise an eye-watering $62 per night to self-park in the garage) and breakfast at Cypress Grove. Unlike other Guest of Honor stays I’ve had, I did not receive an email from the hotel before the stay, and I did not receive a welcome amenity in the room.

Bottom Line:

The destination fee and high parking rates would discourage me from booking the Hyatt Regency Austin with cash. Award stays have the destination fee waived, and Globalists receive free parking on award nights. This hotel would also be a great use of a Category 1-4 free night award.

Location of Hyatt Regency Austin

I’ve never preferred the hustle and bustle of Austin’s 4th Street or 6th Street, and that’s where Hyatt Regency Austin serves a great niche. It’s close to the action without being right on top of it, making it ideal for an urban escape.

If you love to walk, run, or bike, the location could not be more perfect, as it’s along the 10-mile Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail that runs along the lake. The hotel is also pet-friendly, and this area is perfect for enjoying the outdoors with a dog.

The hotel is next to the Congress Avenue Bat Bridge, home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. If you’re at the hotel around sunset, there’s a small hill you can walk to to see the columns of Mexican free-tailed bats emerge for their nightly hunt.

Room

We were upgraded to a 1 King Bed Lake View room, though we arrived at night and would have to wait until morning to see the view. The room was contemporary and compact, with neutral patterned carpet and wallpaper. The bedding was light, with only a thin blanket sandwiched between 2 flat sheets. A lounging chaise with a small table was in front of the window, and across from it was a huge TV, an elongated desk, and a bench.

You can opt out of housekeeping by placing a doorhanger on your door between 5 and 11 p.m. each night. In exchange for skipping housekeeping the next day, you can receive 500 World of Hyatt points (which we value at $7.50) or a $10 food and beverage credit for each night you opt out.

In a renovated room, you’d expect charging to be easy, and that was the case here, with multiple USB-A, USB-C, and standard outlets throughout.

Outlets were plentiful near the bed.

And let’s not forget the star of the show, that amazing view out across the lake. We learned a little too late into our trip planning that the Austin marathon was scheduled for the morning after our arrival. We woke around 7 a.m. to cheers and cowbells as the course started downtown on the other side of the Congress Avenue Bridge.

The marathon had us trapped for the morning, but there are certainly worse views.

Bathroom

The room entered into a tiled area with the closet to the left and a minifridge with coffee and tea service straight ahead. The bathroom, accessed by a sliding door, was to the right.

The mirror was big and bright, with a large counter and a single sink. I liked that 2 bars of soap were provided: 1 for the sink and 1 in the shower. We had plenty of towels, and my husband and I were impressed with the softness of the hand towel (which was different than the body towels).

The shower felt like a bathtub conversion, with a sliding door, a mounted showerhead, and a handheld wand.

Full-size Pharmacopia products were mounted in the shower. The shower door would have benefited from a towel bar, but there were hooks mounted on the shower wall, as well as a hook near the sliding entry door.

Food and Beverages

Cypress Grove

Cypress Grove was open for breakfast buffet only on weekdays from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. and weekends from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. If you don’t have breakfast included in your rate or via Globalist benefit, the fee is $32.95 plus tax and an 18% service charge.

We had a prime location for our first meal.

The buffet had all the typical offerings, only elevated with Texan touches. The cold items included smoked salmon, chia and berries, plain Greek yogurt, fruit compote and yogurt, and fruit cups.

Hot items included a custom egg station, scrambled eggs, chorizo eggs, steel-cut oatmeal, flour tortillas, pork bacon, chicken sausage, waffles, and biscuits.

We could also order pancakes (blueberry, chocolate chip, or berries and cream) from our server, and my husband had no notes on his berries-and-cream pancakes — 10 out of 10.

Ripple & Roots

Ripple & Roots was open for lunch and dinner Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (the bar was open until 11 p.m.). On Friday and Saturday, it was open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. with the bar open until midnight. Live music was scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

This space was just lovely, with a huge indoor/outdoor bar and a relaxing patio in the shade.

Hot Tip:

Guests not staying at the hotel who dine on-site receive 3 hours of validated self-parking, even during major events like SXSW.

Other Options

Juniper Breeze Market, a grab-and-go market with prepared foods, was near the front entrance by check-in and was open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

In-room dining was available from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Bat Bar is scheduled to open by the pool from April to September on Fridays from 2 to 8 p.m., Saturdays from 1 to 8 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Hot Tip:

There isn’t much retail or dining along the lake trail, so if you go on an extended walk, plan to bring water and snacks.

Amenities

Pool

The pool was open daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Private cabanas can be booked here. From the top view, you can see the construction at One Lady Bird Lake, a commercial tower expected to be completed by 2028.

Fitness Center

The fitness center was open 24 hours a day. I loved that it was fully stocked with towels, a water dispenser with cups, and fresh fruit. It had several Pelotons, ellipticals, treadmills, and a few weight machines and free weights.

Hot Tip:

Link your World of Hyatt and Peloton accounts and complete a 10-minute ride or row to earn 100 points per workout, up to 1,000 points per month.

Office Equipment

If you prefer to stay connected at the hotel as you do at home, you can rent dual 24-inch monitors, a universal dock, a keyboard, and a mouse to create the ultimate hotel workstation in your room for $35 a day.

Meeting and Event Spaces

From vast ballrooms to smaller meeting rooms and terraces, Hyatt Regency Austin has multiple options for events.

Service

I started interacting with the hotel team as soon as my check-in window opened and I saw that I could text the hotel. I initially inquired about moving from a double-queen room to one with a king, and throughout my stay, I asked questions about parking and breakfast hours. When there was a loud performance (near the lake) on our final night, the agent texting me offered to send up a sound machine and earplugs. I much prefer this method to calling down to the front desk, and I found the agents to be incredibly quick to respond.

After walking the entire 10-mile lake trail, we refilled our water bottles in the lobby, and I inquired with the front desk agent as to whether the opt-out-of-housekeeping credit was per night or per stay (it’s nightly), since that $10 food and beverage credit sounded like a great end to our afternoon. The agent surprised me with 2 free drink coupons for Ripple & Roots, where my husband said he was served the absolute best and most refreshing beer on earth (I’m sure the trek heavily influenced this).

My interactions with staff throughout our stay were friendly and memorable. When we mentioned to our breakfast server (who was the same both days) on our final morning that we needed to leave very quickly (we arrived at 6:30 a.m., when the restaurant opened, and needed to get on the road fast), she brought out our 2 Diet Cokes with to-go cups and ice. I would have been happy with just the cans, but that extra step was noticed and appreciated.

Thoughts on the Refresh

Past stays at this property have led me to believe previous theming was more “Old Texas chic.” The refresh leans in to more “Keep Austin Weird” with a focus on the music and art that make this capital city unique.

The design is fresh but subdued and could dig into Austin’s funkiness even more.

Though the hotel is a few months post-renovation, some missed details are glaringly obvious, like at Cypress Grove, where I spent breakfast staring at this sloppily painted window trim and the glass railing with unknown peril.

Hopefully, no one signed off on this yet.

Final Thoughts

I’m a big fan of the Hyatt Regency Austin, and I was excited to check out the hotel after its recent renovation. Compared to my last stay in 2019, what I found in 2026 was modern, with subdued neutral finishes and design. I think the hotel tried to distance itself from earlier iterations of cowboy chic to mirror what makes Austin special, but it could have dialed that theming up even further.

That said, nothing changes about what I consider one of the best locations in Austin. The position on Lady Bird Lake is amazing and ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. I’m disappointed that the destination and parking fees make cash stays fairly unreasonable, but award stays (especially for Globalists) are a solid sweet spot.
