The Barceló hotel brand has 180 locations, and this was the first time I’ve stayed at any of them. My wife and I found this property in Madrid, Spain, because of its partnership with Hyatt, and we were drawn to its central location.

Beyond the ability to book a well-located property with points, we found many positives during our 1-night stay at the Barceló Torre de Madrid. Here’s what you should know about this upscale hotel.

1. The Location Is Great

Barceló has 180 hotels in 31 countries, including 4 properties in the Community of Madrid, Spain’s capital region. The Barceló Torre de Madrid location is in the Madrid Tower (Torre de Madrid), next to the Plaza de España on Gran Vía in central Madrid.

The Plaza de España subway stop is served within the city by lines 3 and 10, and numerous buses serve the Gran Vía. Thus, reaching any part of Madrid is extremely easy.

The hotel’s entrance faces the plaza, and signs point to the entrance to make things simple. The large logo sits above the doors.

On the second-floor lobby, floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the plaza. Ample seating near the windows provides space to lounge around.

2. It’s in a Historic Building

The 36-story Torre de Madrid opened in 1957 and was the highest office building in Western Europe until 1967, when a building in Brussels surpassed it. When it opened, the Torre de Madrid was the tallest concrete building in the world and the highest building in Madrid — a title it held until 1982.

3. Art Is Everywhere Inside

The hotel has art in numerous spaces, including paintings on walls and statues at junctures of corridors.

Art was also available in the room, such as this monkey holding a tray that served as a small table near the desk in our quarters.

4. Service Is Great

The hotel’s staff is top-notch, from friendliness to efficiency to honoring their commitments. Check-in experiences include friendly greetings and genuine warmth. Staff also proactively offer assistance with local recommendations, restaurant reservations, and transportation details.

Additionally, staff ensure their commitments are met, such as reserving a taxi or making a wake-up call at a requested time to ensure guests get where they need to be at the right time.

5. There Are Free Items in the Morning

There are complimentary options for guests who don’t want to pay for breakfast in the restaurant and don’t have it included in their room rate. The ground-floor lobby has a handful of grab-and-go food items and coffee.

6. You Can Book With Hyatt Points

The Barceló Torre de Madrid is available in the Mr & Mrs Smith portfolio of boutique, luxury hotel properties. With Hyatt’s partnership with Mr & Mrs Smith, travelers can book this hotel through World of Hyatt to enjoy Hyatt elite status benefits.

It’s also possible to redeem World of Hyatt points for a stay. Due to the dynamic pricing used for Mr & Mrs Smith properties, points costs can be higher than you’ll pay at properties that follow the World of Hyatt award chart. During our stay in early June 2025, room rates started at 30,375 points per night for the cheapest room — the Deluxe Room.

This room costs $325 before taxes, and redemptions here typically provide 1.1 cents per Hyatt point. That’s below our average valuation of Hyatt points, which is 1.5 cents apiece.

While you’ll get stay credit in your World of Hyatt account after nights spent here, you won’t enjoy the complete list of Hyatt elite benefits at Mr & Mrs Smith properties. However, as a Hyatt Globalist (the top tier), you should get a room upgrade if space is available.

7. Rooms Are Spacious and Modern

We stayed in a premium room, 2 steps above the standard room.

This room type has numerous outlets for charging devices and fold-out reading lights next to the bed for convenience.

The king-size bed is 2 twin beds pushed together, but other modern amenities are available throughout the room. These include dimmable lights, a TV, and a desk.

The spacious closet has an interesting sliding wooden door with glass circles.

The bathroom also has modern touches, such as individually wrapped amenities, a bathtub, and a large sink.

The shower also has rainfall and handheld options, both providing excellent water pressure.

8. There’s an Indoor Heated Pool

Inside the wellness area on the eighth floor, you’ll find more than just massages, treatments, and a sauna. You’ll also find a gym, an outdoor terrace, and heated indoor pool.

9. There’s a Jump Lobby With a 2-Elevator System

Elevators from the hotel’s entrance only take you to the first floor (where meeting facilities are located) or the second floor, where you’ll find the lobby. Accessing the floors with guest rooms from the lobby requires using a different set of elevators.

This setup is referred to as a jump lobby. It provides security, as no one can access guest floors without passing through the lobby, while adding a bit of delay to the time spent moving between the main entrance and your room.

10. The Internet Is Really Fast

Upload speeds above 50 Mbps are good for a hotel, but download speeds close to 115 Mbps are far above average for hotel internet. Those needing to work or stream content in their rooms will be happy with the connection here.

11. Room Numbers Are on the Floor

Guest room hallways are rather plain, offering a matte gold look on the doors, green carpet, and tan walls. You won’t find any room numbers at eye level.

Instead, room numbers are found on the floor, etched into the wooden step in front of each room.

Final Thoughts

The Barceló Torre de Madrid is a historic building in a fantastic location next to the Plaza de España in central Madrid. From modern amenities to friendly staff and beautiful art, the hotel has numerous positives. While room rates aren’t cheap with cash, they are standard for hotels of this caliber in Madrid. However, you can reserve this hotel using World of Hyatt points to save money while enjoying an elevated stay.
