I visited the small town of Southbury, Connecticut, in mid-April 2025 with my family of 5 and my parents. We were in town to visit family and chose Wyndham Southbury for our 4-night stay.

It had low rates, an indoor pool, on-site dining, and a convenient location. We appreciated the clean, updated room, welcoming service, and functional amenities that suited our needs — all for under $500.

Here’s everything you need to know before booking.

Booking Wyndham Southbury

There are only 2 hotels in Southbury, and Wyndham Southbury is one of them. The other is Heritage Hotel, a Best Western property, which looked slightly nicer and has extensive amenities, including a golf course and spa, but had a higher rate than Wyndham Southbury. We planned to spend most of our time visiting family, so it didn’t make sense to pay more for amenities we wouldn’t use.

I booked Wyndham Southbury for 4 nights and paid $492.50, including taxes and fees. I wasn’t a Wyndham Rewards member before, but I was able to create an account at booking to get a Wyndham member rate.

The room I booked was available for 60,000 points total for all 4 nights, which would have been a points value of about 0.82 cents per point — below our Wyndham Rewards points valuation of 0.9 cents per point.

I paid with my Chase Sapphire Reserve® and earned 3x Chase Ultimate Rewards points on the booking. I earned 4,280 Wyndham Rewards points by booking directly with Wyndham. If your priority is earning Wyndham Rewards points, consider our guide to the best credit cards for Wyndham Rewards loyalists.

Wyndham Southbury Location

Wyndham Southbury is on Strongtown Road — also known as Connecticut State Route 188 — just off I-84 in Southbury. It’s less than 10 minutes by car to Quassy Amusement Park at Lake Quassapaug and Southford Falls State Park. Quassy Amusement Park is a seasonal park (closed during our visit), and Southford Falls State Park offered an easy walk with scenic waterfall views and a covered bridge.

Southford Falls State Park
Southford Falls State Park was a quick morning outing from the hotel.

It was close to local restaurants and only 10 minutes away from a small shopping center, where we found an Old Navy to grab swimsuits for the indoor pool and a grocery store where we picked up a few necessities.

Checking In

We arrived in the evening after flying into LaGuardia Airport (LGA), spending a few hours in Manhattan, then riding the Metro-North commuter rail to Stamford, Connecticut, where we picked up our rental car. It took about an hour to get to Southbury from Stamford Station.

The back side of the building faced Strongtown Road, where we entered and exited the parking lot. We drove around to the other side to reach the front door.

The front door didn’t face the road.

It had a driveway portico with seating and a sliding glass-door entrance. The portico driveway was wide enough for 2 cars.

The check-in desk was to the right of the entrance, and a small shop next to it sold snacks and necessities such as toiletries and over-the-counter medication. There was a prize wheel for guests who signed up as new Wyndham Rewards members, with options such as a free drink at the bar.

We arrived weary from our journey to the hotel via planes, trains, and automobiles, and we were greeted warmly at the front desk.

My parents had checked in a few hours before us and told the hotel we’d want a room close to theirs. It took just moments to get our room keys, and the front desk attendant excitedly handed over a gift bag a family member had left with them for us.

Lobby

The lobby was essentially a long hallway connecting the wings of the hotel. There was a seating area behind the entrance, and we always saw luggage trolleys available at the front door.

The restaurant, lounge, laundry, business center, and pool were all in the main lobby area, but the fitness center was below the pool.

The seating area outside the lounge was small — too small for us to sit and visit with family. We got a drink at the lounge instead.

The elevators were directly behind the front desk and had pamphlets for local attractions.

Guest Room

The guest room was better than I’d expected. The photos online showed carpeted rooms, and I was worried we’d be in a dated room with old carpet. That wasn’t the case, as the bedroom was updated with wood-look tile floors and furniture in good condition.

Our room was on the first floor, not far from the front desk. Although we could hear hallway traffic through the door sometimes, it was quiet overall, and we didn’t hear anything from neighboring rooms.

Our guest room with 2 queen beds.

We slept comfortably on all-white bedding and had more than enough room on either side of the beds. Since we’re a family of 5 and this room only slept 4, we used an inflatable pad and extra bedding for one of the kids to sleep on.

There was a single nightstand between the beds with a double lamp, phone, and alarm clock with charging outlets. A drawer and an open cubby offered storage.

The nightstand was a good charging station. The alarm clock had 2 USB-A and 2 regular 3-prong power outlets. On the wall was another 3-prong power outlet, 2 USB-A outlets, and a universal power outlet.

At the foot of the beds was a small dresser with a minifridge and coffee maker inside and a TV on top. There were 3 drawers, which were long and not very high, so we had to be careful not to overstuff them. A low armchair and a mirror were next to it.

The minifridge cooled fine and had enough room for drinks and leftovers. The coffee used pods, and there were packets with sugar and powdered creamer. We picked up half-and-half at a local market, so we didn’t have to use the powdered creamer. The room had no microwave, but there was a microwave in the front desk market.

Hot Tip:

There was only powdered coffee creamer. To pick up creamer, hit the gas station at the corner or visit a nearby grocery store. You can also visit the Arrowhead Restaurant in the lobby to buy a $2 coffee with cream. If you need a microwave, stop by the market at the front desk.

A desk with a swivel chair and a lamp was on the other side.

On the desk was another universal power outlet, 2 USB-A outlets, and a U.S. 3-prong outlet. An Ethernet jack and a U.S. standard 3-prong outlet were on the lamp.

Near the door was a small closet with a luggage stand, an iron and an ironing board, and a hanging rack.

A small table and mirror were inside the door and across from the bathroom. A safe was on a stand below the table. We tried it, but the numbers behaved strangely, showing up on the screen multiple times when we only pressed a number once. For example, if we lightly pressed 1, it would display “111.” I didn’t trust it to work right and didn’t want valuables to get stuck in the safe, so we didn’t use it.

Bathroom

Though the bedroom appeared updated, the bathroom didn’t. It was fairly utilitarian and reminded me of bathrooms from road trip hotels I visited in the ’90s, with a laminate countertop and molded shower-tub combo.

While the bathroom did not win points in the style category, it was clean and functional, and everything was in good condition. There was a single sink with decent counter space and a built-in tissue dispenser. Small bathroom amenity bottles containing lotion, shampoo, and conditioner were on the counter.

The bathroom was small and dated but functional and clean.

A wall-mounted hair dryer was at the sink, and a towel rack was next to the shower. The towel rack had slots at the top, which were great for hanging multiple swimsuits to dry.

Like the rest of the bathroom, the shower-tub combo was simple yet serviceable, with a curved shower curtain rod and plenty of hot water with good pressure.

My parents stayed in an accessible room nearby. Their bathroom was updated with slate tile and a roll-in shower.

Amenities

Wyndham Southbury offers several amenities, including an indoor pool, a 24/7 fitness center, and convenience amenities such as on-site EV charging, a business center, and a laundry room.

Indoor Pool

When we visited, Southbury was wet, cold, and dreary — hardly the kind of place we’d expected to swim. But the indoor pool was great for entertaining the kids and wearing them out each night before shuffling them off to bed. It got a little crowded on Saturday night, and the edge trim looked like it needed a paint update, but overall, we appreciated having this pool.

Fitness Center

Downstairs from the pool was a 24/7 fitness center. It wasn’t extensive, but it had standard workout equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, weight machines, and free weights.

There were restrooms in the fitness center, along with a water station.

Parking

The parking lot was large and open, with complimentary self-parking. We had no trouble finding close spots each day of our stay.

At the back of the property, along the road, was an EV charging station with 4 spots.

Wi-Fi

Free Wi-Fi was available in our guest room, and we found it sufficient for working and streaming videos.

Laundry

A small laundry room was around the corner from the front desk. It had a coin-operated washer and dryer with a change machine, a small folding table, and a chair. Detergent and dryer sheets were available at the front desk.

Business Center

Next to the laundry room was a small business center with a workstation, printer, and an ATM.

Service

The service was great at Wyndham Southbury. The front desk staff was always helpful, whether checking us in quickly with a gift delivery or giving us more shampoo and coffee upon request. The towels frequently ran out in the pool, but more would appear in a few minutes if we asked for a restock. Daily housekeeping was available, which was impressive because we often see limited housekeeping these days. In the lounge, the bartender was happy to accommodate our large group with a moment’s notice.

Final Thoughts

We didn’t have many hotel choices for our trip to Southbury, but I was satisfied with Wyndham Southbury. It offered a great price and a comfortable room with an indoor pool and on-site restaurant and lounge — amenities that were just right for our family visit. I’d gladly visit again the next time we’re in Southbury!
