No one loves award chart devaluations, so grab a seat and buckle up. Award flights with Fiji Airways are getting more expensive.

Maybe you saw this coming, now that Fiji Airways is joining Oneworld and adopting American Airlines’ award program. However, the writing is now officially on the wall for Fiji Airways flights booked with AAdvantage miles to get more expensive.

Here’s what you need to know.

Fiji Airways Joining Oneworld, Adopting American Airlines’ Program

As a quick recap, Fiji Airways is joining the Oneworld alliance. Fiji Airways is also adopting AAdvantage as its loyalty program — yes, American Airlines AAdvantage. You’ll soon use the same program for earning and redeeming miles as well as accruing elite status.

American Airlines uses dynamic pricing for its own flights, which has been an unfortunate reality for a while now. However, the airline still uses a standard, fixed award chart when using your AA miles for flights on partner airlines, assuming there’s availability.

Fiji Airways, unfortunately, appears to be moving in the direction of dynamic pricing.

Bottom Line:

Fiji Airways will start using American Airlines’ award program, and AA looks primed to price these awards dynamically.

Will Fiji Airways Get Dynamic Pricing?

Technically, Fiji Airways is still a partner airline. While it should adopt the AAdvantage program soon, awards should still be priced at a fixed rate. You should be able to book a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Nadi, Fiji (NAN) for 40,000 miles one-way in economy or 80,000 miles one-way in business class.

However, as first reported by AwardWallet, that wasn’t the case for a few hours this morning. Some business-class awards were priced as high as 405,000 miles per passenger on dates where saver awards (the cheapest award seats) were no longer available.

If you search for awards now, you’ll see that things have returned to normal. Either you’ll find awards pricing the way we expect, or they’re not available. The dynamic pricing has gone away.

We reached out to American Airlines AAdvantage for comment, and a spokesperson for the airline confirmed that it’s running tests on Fiji Airways awards. “As we previously announced, Fiji Airways will be joining AAdvantage and Oneworld. We’re currently testing award availability on Fiji Airways flights and will have more to share when they join the alliance and our loyalty program.”

What those tests entail wasn’t made clear, but it looks like dynamic pricing is coming to these awards once Fiji Airways adopts AAdvantage as its loyalty program. If that happens, the best way to get to the South Pacific with your points and miles will likely change.

Final Thoughts

For now, things have returned to normal, and we’re seeing the blank spaces we expect on AAdvantage award searches that involve Fiji Airways flights. Either they’re available at the expected price or aren’t available at all.

However, prices looked wildly different for a few hours today. This could be a sign of bad things to come. We’ll find out for sure when Fiji Airways adopts AAdvantage as its award program in the coming months.
