American Airlines has rolled out a new package called AAdvantage Pass, offering members automatic elite status, 6 digits worth of bonus miles, and bonus Loyalty Points to help them reach the next elite status tier.

You can purchase this pass for yourself or for others, just in time for the holidays. Is the $5,000 price tag worth it, though? Let’s take a closer look to find out.

AA Launches AAdvantage Pass for $5,000

American Airlines has announced its new AAdvantage Pass offering. It’s not live on aa.com yet, but we’re told it should be available for sale soon.

For the price of $5,000, AAdvantage members can purchase the package for themselves or others, and it includes the following:

  • Instant AAdvantage elite status: Members receive AA Gold status, offering perks like extra checked baggage allowance, moving up in the boarding priority for flights, and preferred seats. This status lastd for 1 year.
  • Bonus AA miles: Receive 100,000 miles in your AAdvantage account to redeem however you’d like.
  • Bonus Loyalty Points: These are the status-qualifying points you need to reach higher status tiers, and you get 15,000 of them.

Is AAdvantage Pass Worth It?

Everyone’s situation will vary, but let’s crunch some numbers to see what these items are worth — and whether they add up to $5,000 to justify the cost of AAdvantage Pass.

We value AAdvantage miles at 1.4 cents each. That makes 100,000 AA miles worth $1,400. And our analysis puts the value of AA Gold status at $1,565 annually.

What are those Loyalty Points worth? That’s difficult to quantify. As a reminder, here’s how many Loyalty Points you need for each AAdvantage tier:

  • 40,000 for Gold
  • 75,000 for Platinum
  • 125,000 for Platinum Pro
  • 200,000 for Executive Platinum

If you’re 15,000 Loyalty Points short of reaching the next status tier, you might find these very valuable. That makes the math boil down to this: Are 15,000 Loyalty Points worth $2,035?

If you take the $5,000 cost of AAdvantage Pass and subtract the value of the miles ($1,400) and AA Gold status ($1,565), that leaves you with $2,035. Do you value earning 15,000 Loyalty Points with no effort at that number? If so, AAdvantage Pass is worth it. If not, it isn’t.

Hot Tip:

There are lots of ways to earn AA Loyalty Points, even without flying. We’ve rounded up a list of ideas to help you out.
