Aeromexico announced today that it would begin nonstop service between Mexico City (MEX) and Newark, starting in late October.

Here’s what you need to know about this exciting new route.

Aeromexico’s New East Coast Route

The 1x daily route begins on October 27 and will be operated on the Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.

This is certainly an interesting route for Aeromexico, as it will connect directly from its Mexico City hub to one of the largest Star Alliance hubs in the U.S.: Newark (EWR).

And Aeromexico already has a presence at nearby New York City (JFK), along with SkyTeam partner Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and VivaAerobus. Additionally, United flies nonstop from Newark to Mexico City.

Aeromexico’s new route connecting Newark comes just a few weeks after the airline launched a massive U.S. expansion. In early July, the airline announced nonstop service from Mexico City to Raleigh-Durham (RDU), Tampa (TPA), and Washington (IAD).

Earlier this year, Aeromexico resumed nonstop Boston (BOS) to Mexico City flights as part of the Delta-Aeromexico Joint Cooperation Agreement (JCA). This partnership between the 2 airlines offers a network of flights, reciprocal benefits, and expanded operations between the 2 countries.

How To Book

The new flights are already available by booking on Aeromexico.com or through Delta. Cash prices start at around $475 round-trip for dates this fall but increase into the $500+ range this winter.

The high cash prices mean this route is an excellent candidate for using points and miles. For instance, a one-way ticket will cost you just 29,000 Delta SkyMiles, plus taxes and fees. (If you’re running low, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Delta at a 1:1 ratio.)

You can also book award tickets directly with Aeromexico Rewards points, starting around 18,000 miles one-way. You can transfer Amex points, Brex Rewards, Capital One miles, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy to Aeromexico.

Of those, the best option is Amex. That’s because Amex points transfer to Aeromexico at a ratio of 1:1.6. (Amex also sometimes offers transfer bonuses to Aeromexico.) However, transfers can take between 2 to 12 days to complete, which isn’t great if you have a last-minute award you want to book.

Final Thoughts

This is pretty good news from Aeromexico, which will now serve 2 airports in the New York City metro area. While the route doesn’t start until October, it’s starting in time to get you to Mexico for Dia de los Muertos, and the low rates with Delta and Aeromexico make this flight one to book ASAP!
