Just a few weeks ago, Allegiant Air confirmed that it would close its base in Austin, Texas, citing space constraints. And while we knew that would likely impact the airline’s routes out of Austin, it wasn’t until today that we knew exactly what the impacts would be.

We now know that Allegiant will eliminate 10 routes starting in early January 2025. Let’s take a look.

Allegiant Closing Austin Base

On June 25, 2024, Allegiant confirmed that it would close its Austin base, first opened in 2021. Allegiant Air originally established its base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) at a cost of $75 million.

As of January 7, 2025, however, Austin will cease to be a base for Allegiant, though the airline has said Austin will remain important to Allegiant’s route network.

Presently, Allegiant operates 18 nonstop routes from Austin and accounts for 1.4% of passenger traffic at AUS. However, that’s sure to change now that the airline will drop 10 of those 18 routes.

Starting on January 7, 2025, Allegiant will cut the following nonstop flights from Austin:

  • Bozeman (BZM)
  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (CVG)
  • Des Moines (DSM)
  • Eugene (EUG)
  • Grand Rapids (GRR)
  • Knoxville (TYS)
  • Louisville (SDF)
  • Santa Ana (SNA)
  • Sarasota/Bradenton (SRQ)
  • Washington-Dulles (IAD)

Remaining routes may continue on a seasonal basis. Additionally, flights between Austin and Allegiant’s other bases may continue, given that the other airport can serve as the base for crew rest and equipment maintenance.

Why the change? The Austin airport is demolishing the no-frills South Terminal, served by both Allegiant and Frontier, another low-cost carrier. Fees for the airlines were cheaper at this terminal than the main terminal, and Allegiant is following Frontier’s lead in cutting most flights to the airport in preparation for these changes.

Bottom Line:

While Allegiant just announced several new routes on the East Coast, major changes at the Austin airport mean the airport is eliminating its base there.

Final Thoughts

Allegiant is cutting most of its route network out of Austin and eliminating its base there due to upcoming renovations and terminal projects at the airport. While we know 10 routes will be cut, don’t be surprised if the flight options to and from Austin suffer further reductions between now and January.
