When the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced this fall that it would allow longer flights from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), many D.C. residents rejoiced.

Now, we’re starting to learn about the routes that are coming to the airport. American Airlines has announced an exciting new route from DCA to San Antonio (SAT).

Let’s take a look at the news!

Nonstop Washington D.C.-San Antonio Service Begins March 2025

This launch comes after a significant change from the DOT, which allowed longer flights from DCA. The route is set to launch on March 2, 2025, and American will offer the only nonstop flights between the 2 cities.

“This new route is a game-changer, bringing our customers an even more seamless travel experience and strengthening our region’s direct connection to the heart of the nation,” said Jesus Saenz, San Antonio’s Director of Airports.

Unfortunately, these flights are not yet live on American’s website or on Google Flights. Right now, it’s unclear how much they’ll cost with cash or AAdvantage miles. We will monitor the route closely and update this post as soon as we receive further information.

Longer Flights Coming to DCA

DCA is the area’s only short-haul airport, and airlines have historically been limited to a 1,250-mile perimeter. While the airport is closer to Washington, D.C., proper (and a stop on the Yellow and Blue Metro lines), travelers have been limited in where they can fly.

The airport serves some Canadian destinations and even San Juan (SJU), Puerto Rico. But travelers flying medium- and long-haul distances generally have had to fly out of Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) or Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), which are further away.

However, the DOT granted slot exemptions in the fall for 5 airlines, including American, paving the way for longer flights.

Since the announcement, other airlines have announced longer flights to and from DCA. Just this week, Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines have announced new routes from DCA to San Diego (SAN) and Seattle (SEA), respectively.

More flights means more passengers, and DCA will need to be prepared for an influx of travelers looking to pass time before their flight. There’s been a wave of new lounge openings in recent months, including an American Express Centurion Lounge and a Capital One Landing.

Bottom Line:

Other lounges at DCA include 3 Admirals Clubs, a Delta Sky Club, and a United Club.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines was granted a slot exemption at DCA, and it is putting it to good use. The airline will operate the only nonstop route between the Washington D.C. region and San Antonio.

American flyers will soon have options to earn and redeem miles on flights to and from the Alamo City!
