For American Airlines flyers who selected systemwide upgrades as their Loyalty Point Rewards benefit in 2025, there’s good news from AAdvantage, American’s loyalty program.

Many flyers left these upgrades completely unused, thanks to the increasing difficulty in using them. Now, American Airlines is letting many of these passengers extend the validity of their systemwide upgrades.

Here’s what you should know.

Using Systemwide Upgrades

There are essentially 2 ways to use an American Airlines systemwide upgrade (SWU).

On American’s own planes, you need “C” upgrade availability, which is almost non-existent, even on routes that used to be reliably good for using them, such as New York City to London Heathrow. If you’re already in paid business class, you can upgrade to first class if there is “A” space, but American is slowly removing true first-class cabins from its planes.

You can use a systemwide upgrade on British Airways to go from main cabin to premium economy, premium economy to business class, or business class to first class. This is allowed for routes to and from Europe only, and British Airways only allows one-class upgrades when using a certificate. British Airways is known for imposing notoriously high fuel surcharges, and there is a luxury tax for departures out of the United Kingdom, so even using a “free” systemwide upgrade would result in hundreds (sometimes thousands) of dollars of extra cost.

Extending Your Upgrades

American is now offering the ability for AAdvantage elites to extend the use of their systemwide upgrades.

An American Airlines spokesperson confirmed that the airline is offering flexibility for those who couldn’t use their SWUs before they expired. Travelers report speaking to AAdvantage customer service and being offered one of 3 options for any systemwide upgrade that expired on March 31, 2026:

  • A 6-month extension on the systemwide upgrade, allowing you to book any flight and have the upgrade clear prior to the expiration
  • 2,500 Loyalty Points
  • 10,000 AAdvantage miles

American Airlines did not confirm these specific incentives with us, but flyers online report being offered these 3 options when speaking to American. Reportedly, flyers will need to call American starting April 7 to be offered these options, and you’ll need to speak with AAdvantage customer service.

If you have to choose, it’s likely you will get the most value out of extending your upgrades by 6 months, assuming you can find confirmed availability to use them. If you’re not willing to extend your upgrades, 10,000 miles is likely your next best bet. Unless you’re extremely close to the next status level and don’t think you’ll cross over, 2,500 Loyalty Points is probably the least valuable choice.

American also allows you to apply your upgrade certificates to other people’s flights, so you don’t need to use them yourself. Extending them may provide you with some extra time to find time to use them for yourself or a friend.

Analyzing This Policy

I appreciate that American is recognizing how hard it is to use these upgrades. While offering an extension on the expiration is nice, it would be even better if American would open more upgrade space or make these upgrade certificates far easier to use, rather than just pushing the expiry date out.

Recently, ExpertFlyer added additional functionality to make searching for upgrade space even easier, but this is outside of American’s website and requires a separate paid subscription. Even with this subscription, it’s very noticeable that there simply aren’t many flights where you can actually upgrade your seat right now. It results in elite members being placed on the dreaded waitlist, which may or may not clear.

Final Thoughts

If you recently had a systemwide upgrade expire, be sure to call American starting April 7 to take advantage of this new offer. It’s unknown how long this will stick around, so time is of the essence if you want to extend your upgrades or choose something else you consider more valuable.
