American Express Green Card Will Become the Classic Green Card on August 20

American Express has confirmed that the Amex Green card will officially be renamed the American Express Classic Green Card on August 20, 2026.

Beginning June 1, existing cardholders will start receiving communications notifying them of the upcoming change. However, Amex says there are no changes to the card’s benefits, services, rewards structure, or overall membership experience at this time.

In practical terms, current cardholders can continue using their cards exactly as they do today. The update is strictly a rebranding effort and does not affect how the card earns rewards, its annual fee, travel benefits, or any other existing features.

Starting August 20, the new “American Express Classic Green Card” name will begin appearing across cardholder materials, digital experiences, and other Amex communications.

For anyone researching the card online, expect to see both names floating around during the transition period. That’s because the official name change won’t take effect until August 20, even though cardholders are being notified in advance.

So far, the name change appears to be exactly that — a name change. American Express hasn’t revealed plans to incorporate any new benefits, perks, or other updates tied to the rebrand.

Hot Tip:

Current cardholders don’t need to take any action. Your account will automatically transition to the American Express Classic Green Card when the name change takes effect on August 20.

Final Thoughts

The Amex Green card isn’t going away — it’s simply getting a new name. Beginning August 20, the card will officially become the American Express Classic Green Card, though cardholders will start receiving communication from Amex about the change as early as today (June 1).

For now, this update appears to be purely cosmetic, as the issuer says there are no changes to the card’s benefits, services, or overall membership experience.
