Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

If you have a stash of American Express Membership Rewards points lying around, there’s an opportunity to maximize their value.

Right now, you can leverage a 15% bonus when you transfer your Amex Membership Rewards points to the Avianca LifeMiles program.

The Avianca LifeMiles program is somewhat of a hidden gem in the points-and-miles world, so this bonus could prove to be very advantageous.

Here’s everything that you need to know.

Transfer Bonus Details

Normally Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to Avianca LifeMiles at a ratio of 1:1, but right now members get 15% more LifeMiles when transferring Amex points. This offer is valid through August 31, 2023. Note that you must transfer at least 1,000 miles to be eligible for the bonus.

How To Maximize Avianca LifeMiles Redemptions

Avianca might not be well known for non-points aficionados but from cheap economy flights within the U.S. to first-class flights to Europe, LifeMiles is a standout airline program — and it happens to be one of our favorites.

While its website is sorely lacking (not to mention poor customer service), you won’t find a better combination of cheap award rates and low taxes and fees for awards. Plus, it’s very easy to earn Avianca LifeMiles for fantastic redemptions.

Some of our favorite redemptions include:

  • New York (JFK) to Frankfurt (FRA) in Lufthansa first class for 87,000 LifeMiles
  • Boston (BOS) to Zurich (ZRH) in SWISS business class for 63,000 LifeMiles
  • Tokyo (HND) to Sydney (SYD) in ANA business class for 40,000 LifeMiles

Lufthansa first class awards are almost never available more than 15 days in advance to partners, so you’ll have to book pretty close to departure. Luckily, LifeMiles doesn’t levy any close-in booking fees.

LifeMiles can also be a great way to book domestic itineraries within the U.S. on Star Alliance partner United Airlines, and this transfer bonus lowers the cost even more. For more options, be sure to read about all the best ways to redeem Avianca LifeMiles.

Final Thoughts

Having a flexible point currency like American Express Membership Rewards points is great for opportunities like this Avianca LifeMiles bonus.

Remember, you can only transfer in 1 direction: once you send points to Avianca, you can’t get them back to your Amex account. Make sure to have a redemption in mind before making the transaction — and make sure to do so before August 31!
