Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

The beginning of a new month typically means new transfer bonuses, and American Express has just launched a transfer bonus to Hilton Honors aimed at those thinking of hotel stays for August and beyond.

Let’s take a look at the details of this bonus!

Hilton Honors Transfer Bonus

Typically, you can transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors at a 1:2 ratio, which means you’ll get 2 Hilton Honors points for every Amex Membership Rewards point you move over to the program.

Now, thanks to this offer, you can get 2,500 Hilton Honors points for every 1,000 Membership Rewards points you transfer — a bonus of 25%. This offer is valid through August 31, 2023, so if you’re interested, make sure you transfer your Amex points to Hilton Honors before that date.

Is It Worth It?

Amex Membership Rewards points are some of the easiest to earn through cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express and American Express® Gold Card. And they’re the most valuable flexible points around, worth 2.2 cents apiece according to our valuations. This means you’ll likely lose value when you transfer points to Hilton.

However, transferring Amex points over to Hilton can make sense if you need to top off your account balance for a specific redemption or you have a short, inexpensive stay.

Hilton has more than 6,000 hotels spanning 6 continents in its portfolio. But it doesn’t use an award chart like some chains do (Hyatt, for example). Instead, Hilton uses variable award pricing, which means the number of points you may spend can vary by day. Sometimes, that can work in your favor.

Hot Tip: We value Hilton Honors points at 0.5 cents apiece. Use our points and miles valuations to determine whether it’s better to use points or cash for a given hotel stay.

For example, if you found yourself short a few thousand points before booking a stay at The Gates Hotel South Beach – a DoubleTree by Hilton in Miami (with nights through November starting at 45,000 Hilton Honors points), a 25% transfer bonus can actually be a pretty good deal. Otherwise, it doesn’t make sense to completely drain your balance of Amex points to transfer to Hilton.

Final Thoughts

Even though we’ve seen this Amex-to-Hilton bonus before, it’s always a nice surprise. If you have a Hilton redemption coming up soon, using some of your Amex points (at a 25% bonus) could be a decent deal, depending on the property you’re looking at.

Otherwise, you may want to save your Amex points for even better transfer partners, like Air Canada or Virgin Atlantic. Either way, remember to transfer your points over to Hilton before August 31.

Great read!

Question – how often do these 30%-50% bonuses come around? I’m assuming people have noticed a pattern for these by now, e.g., every 3-4 months or every September. Would you say that’s accurate or, is there any way to be notified of these sort of things without logging onto Amex every day?

Thanks as always!

Hi Avi,

Thanks for the kind words. Amex seems to run a type of transfer bonus virtually every month. In terms of Hilton-specific bonuses, we usually see those about 3 times per year or so. For updates, you can always check out our transfer partner calculator where we track every transfer bonus across every transferable points currency.

Thanks, Jarrod! This site is amazing, and I can’t believe you’re sharing all this knowledge for free. Personally, I’ve found that transferring to partner airlines gives me the best bang for my buck, but I can totally see how others could benefit from transferring to Hilton or Marriott for those bonuses.

Keep up the great work!

Cheers,
Avi Kerendian
