I could lower my T-Mobile cell phone bill by $10 per month by enrolling in autopay, but I haven’t done it because the cell phone protection I get from my Platinum Card® from American Express is worth the cost. I’m giving up a $10 discount but gaining protection for up to $800 per claim.

Keeping Cell Phone Protection Costs Me $10 Per Month

Getting a T-Mobile autopay discount requires paying with a bank account, debit card, or T-Mobile Visa.

I used to pay my T-Mobile bill with The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, which offers cell phone protection and a $10 monthly U.S. wireless phone service statement credit (enrollment required). I was able to get the $5-per-line autopay discount by enrolling in autopay with T-Mobile and paying the bill early before the autopay date with my Amex Business Platinum card. With 2 phones on the plan, the autopay discount and statement credit essentially saved me $20 per month on my cell phone bill.

That workaround ended in November 2025, when T-Mobile introduced the T-Mobile Visa and made it the only credit card eligible for an autopay discount. I continued to pay with my card and lost the $10 autopay discount. I’ve since canceled my Amex Business Platinum card and lost the $10 per month wireless bill statement credit, too.

I considered just paying with a bank account or debit card, or even getting the T-Mobile Visa, but none of those payment methods offer the same protections I can get by paying with the Amex Platinum card every month.

Why the Amex Platinum Card Is a Safer Choice

With Amex Platinum card cell phone protection, both of the phone lines on my bill are covered for repair or replacement after damage or theft. I can get up to $800 per approved claim with a $50 deductible and can make up to 2 approved claims in a 12-month period (up to $1,600 total).

Damage includes cracked screens, and eligible theft is also covered. I can get reimbursed up to $800 per claim based on eligible repair or replacement costs.

Our phones are covered as long as we pay our monthly wireless bill with the Amex Platinum card. Protection starts on the first day of the following calendar month after you pay your bill with the card, and changing the bill to another payment method, even temporarily, can suspend coverage starting the next month. Both of our phones count toward the account’s 2-claim annual limit.

Let’s say I run over my phone with a bike and smash the screen, like I did once in Key West. I can take it to a repair shop and get a quote for $300 to replace the screen. Then I can take that repair quote to the Amex benefits administrator. I would submit the quote, photos of the damage, and other required information (including my Amex statement showing I paid my cell phone bill with my Amex Platinum card) to the benefits administrator and likely receive $250 reimbursement after my $50 deductible.

For theft or more costly repairs, like water damage that completely fries my phone, I would probably need a replacement. I could go to T-Mobile and get a quote for a replacement phone, which would likely be more than $800. I would then follow the same process to submit the quote, evidence of the theft or damage, and get up to $800 to help pay for the replacement phone.

Amex Platinum card cell phone protection has limits. It doesn’t cover issues such as lost phones, cosmetic damage, and normal wear. You have to report your claim within 90 days of theft or damage and submit proof, such as images of the damage, within 120 days. If your phone is stolen, you must file a police report within 48 hours.

Hot Tip:

The Amex Platinum card is one of the best cards for cell phone protection, offering up to $800 per claim (2 claims totaling $1,600 annually) with a $50 deductible.

Cell phone protection is my primary reason for using my Amex Platinum card to pay my cell phone bill, but I also don’t want to use my bank account or debit card for anything unless I have no other choice. I get less fraud protection with a bank account or debit card, and using my card for everything gives me time to review charges on my statement before I actually have to spend money from my bank account to pay for them.

The T-Mobile Visa card is an option, but it does not offer cell phone protection as a benefit, and I would rather earn valuable Membership Rewards points on my cell phone bill rather than T-Mobile rewards.

Bottom Line:

Paying with my Amex Platinum card gives me up to $1,600 in cell phone protection every year, and it’s my preferred payment method anyway. For me, that’s worth losing the $10 autopay discount every month.

How Amex Platinum Card Protection Compares

If I ever decide to get the autopay discount and use my bank account, debit card, or T-Mobile Visa card, I could purchase cell phone protection separately instead of using my Amex Platinum card benefit. But it would cost me more than the autopay discount I lose by paying with my card.

T-Mobile Protection 360 costs $7 to $26 per device, depending on device type. Even for the lowest-priced device, I would pay $14 per month — $4 more than the $10 autopay discount I miss out on. For my actual devices, the protection plan is $19 per month ($38 total), which is significantly more than my missed autopay discount.

I would pay $336 more per year to claim the autopay discount and purchase separate cell phone protection, rather than paying my bill with my Amex Platinum card and using the included cell phone protection benefit.

T-Mobile’s coverage includes $0 screen fixes, unlimited accidental damage claims, and a replacement phone if you lose yours, so it offers broader coverage than the cell phone protection I can get from my Amex Platinum card. It would be nice to have that additional coverage. Still, I am most likely to make a screen damage claim, as I have in the past. The Amex Platinum card cell phone protection covers the damage I am most concerned about, and it costs me less to use.

My Amex Platinum Card Is Still a Better Deal

It costs me $120 annually in missed autopay discounts to get cell phone protection for 2 phones using my Amex Platinum card. It covers what I value the most: help with unexpected repairs or replacement. Although it’s been a few years since I’ve had to make a cell phone claim, it’s reassuring knowing our phones are covered for up to $1,600 per 12-month period.

Beyond the cell phone protection, I value the Amex Platinum card for its broader benefits. And rewards cards are always my preferred payment method, even for routine monthly bills. I also like that I earn Membership Rewards every month when I pay my bill.

I would reconsider my decision if my lost autopay discount were larger or our phones were inexpensive enough that we could easily replace them. It might also make sense if we were more concerned about losing our phones or if we hit the 2-claim, $1,600 annual limit on the Amex Platinum card’s coverage. The T-Mobile Visa card would be a much stronger option if it included cell phone protection as a benefit alongside the ability to get the autopay discount.

Final Thoughts

When T-Mobile closed the credit card autopay discount loophole, I was disappointed to lose the discount, but I kept paying my bill with my Amex Platinum card because the cell phone protection and other benefits are worth it. Giving up $10 per month is a small price to pay for up to $1,600 in cell phone protection per 12-month period.
