Update: The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Amtrak is offering a limited-time-only sale for redeeming Amtrak Guest Rewards points where you can save up to 40% on travel. The sale runs through August 25, so you’ll need to book quickly if you’re interested in traveling, but the savings can be quite substantial.

Details of the Offer

  • To redeem your points, you need to book on the Amtrak website or app; you cannot book over the phone.
  • The sale runs from August 18, 2022, at 2 p.m. EST through August 25, at 11:59 p.m. EST.
  • You can travel through September 30, 2022, however, September 2 and September 5 are blackout dates and are not open for travel.
  • The number of seats open under this rewards sale is limited, and you may not find sale seats on every train in every class of service.
  • The sale is good for both coach class and premium travel, whether in Acela first class, a regional business class, or even a sleeper cabin.

Sample Trips

Here are some sample trips you can take under the sale:

  • Los Angeles to Chicago in coach for 3,898 points. Normally this would cost more than 5,000 points.
  • New York City to Boston in business class for 1,896 points. Normally this would cost more than 5,000 points. Interestingly, on many trains, business class is showing cheaper than coach class, which indicates some trains may only be targeted for premium cabin sales and not just all cabins.
  • Washington, D.C. to Miami in a roomette for 11,715 points. Normally this would cost more than 15,000 points.

Hot Tip: You’ll want to book your trains quickly as the sale is capacity controlled and once sale seats are taken, they won’t reappear.

How To Earn Amtrak Guest Rewards Points

It’s very difficult to earn Amtrak Guest Rewards points, and while there are some opportunities out there to convert hotel points to Amtrak, that conversion comes at an extraordinarily bad rate. The best way to earn Amtrak points — since there is no longer an Amtrak co-brand credit card — is to actually ride Amtrak. Amtrak will likely be coming out with a new co-branded credit card partner soon, but in the meantime, you’ll need to earn your points the old-fashioned way.

Final Thoughts

If you have Amtrak points to spare and want to get away this September, you can save a considerable amount of points to book under this sale. You can save up to 40% on various routes, and the sale even includes travel in a sleeper compartment or premium class.
