Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

Amtrak has brought back back a popular promotion from last year: a buy one, get one sale for routes across New York State for the next 2 months.

You’ll need to book these fares by February 28, 2024, so it’s a perfect excuse to take your valentine (or another traveling companion!) on a free trip. Here’s what you need to know about Amtrak’s latest sale!

Amtrak’s BOGO Sale

When you purchase 1 ticket, you’ll receive a companion ticket on the same train for free. You’ll need to book your trip before February 28, 2024, and your travel dates must be before February 29, 2024.

This sale is only valid on trains within New York State operating Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday of each week. These are the trains participating: Adirondack, Empire Service, Ethan Allen, Maple Leaf and Associated Thruways (except 7000-8999 Thruway service).

To participate in the sale, book online and use the promo code V309. Finally, this deal is eligible for coach class only.

If you plan on traveling with another person, the fares in this sale can’t be topped since you’ll be able to take another person with you at no extra charge.

You can travel for 2 people between these city pairs, as an example:

  • Albany to New York Penn Station, for $36
  • Buffalo to New York Penn Station, for $53

The Fine Print

  • Advance purchase required — 1-day minimum
  • Valid for travel on Adirondack, Empire Service, Ethan Allen, Maple Leaf and Associated Thruways (except 7000-8999 Thruway service)
  • Discount passenger types permitted
  • Valid for Sale: January 1, 2024 – February 28, 2024
  • Valid for Travel: January 2, 2024 – February 29, 2024
  • No blackout dates
  • Cancellations are permitted before departure, though a fee may apply
  • Passengers must travel with each other at all times

Final Thoughts

Amtrak’s sales are usually very lucrative, and although this current promotion is only valid for 2 people, you can save a significant amount of money.

That said, it’s limited to use within New York State, so this offer might not be useful for those outside of the area. However, if you’ve wanted to travel by train, there is no better excuse than when a free ticket is involved.
