We’ve all been there. The flight attendant grabs the mic somewhere around cruising altitude, mentions a “limited-time bonus offer,” and walks down the aisle waving a brochure while half the cabin pretends to scroll their phones.

Usually, I tell everyone not to apply for a credit card during the inflight pitch. Typically, these welcome offers are either identical to the public ones — which gives me zero incentive to apply midair — or even slightly worse.

Imagine my surprise when, on a recent American Airlines flight, I did something I’ve literally told friends and family not to do. Here’s why I broke my own rule and applied for the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite™ Mastercard® midflight, and why I won’t be so quick to ignore these welcome offers next time.

AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Card Overview

The AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite card is arguably the most popular American Airlines co-branded credit card in Citi’s lineup. It comes with the following perks:

  • 2 AAdvantage miles for every $1 spent at gas stations, restaurants, and on eligible American Airlines purchases
  • 1 Loyalty Point for every 1 eligible AAdvantage mile earned from purchases
  • A $125 American Airlines flight discount after you spend $20,000 or more in purchases during your card membership year and renew your card
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • First free checked bag on domestic American Airlines itineraries for you and up to 4 companions traveling with you on the same reservation
  • Preferred boarding on American Airlines flights
Hot Tip:

Not long ago, Citi officially took over the American Airlines credit card portfolio, ending Barclays’ run as AA’s co-issuer. Since that move, we’ve seen some intriguing welcome bonus offers.

Finding the Best-Ever 80K Welcome Offer

I’ve had the AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite card before — actually, several times over the years. It’s a solid midtier airline card, especially for semi-frequent American Airlines flyers who want the free checked bag, bonus categories on spending, and the ability to earn Loyalty Points toward AAdvantage status without paying a premium annual fee.

Historically, welcome bonus offers on this card tend to land in the 50,000- to 60,000-mile range. Occasionally, we see 75,000 miles.

But 80,000 miles? That’s the highest public welcome offer we’ve ever seen on this card. On its own, that’s strong.

The current public 80,000-mile introductory offer requires $3,500 in spending within 4 months to unlock the welcome bonus. The inflight version offered the exact same 80,000 miles — but after just $1,000 in spending within 3 months.

That’s not an insignificant difference in the minimum spending requirement. Effectively, that’s less than a third of the required spending for the same bonus.

How I Found the 80K Inflight Offer And Decided to Apply

We had just taken off when I opened my laptop and logged into American Airlines’ new free Wi-Fi portal. (Finally, free Wi-Fi on AA.)

Before I could even check my email, a page appeared for the AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite card. Normally, I would just close out the page and proceed with the Wi-Fi login process. But this time I stopped.

The terms read, “Earn 80,000 AAdvantage bonus miles after $1,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening.”

I stared at it for a second. Then I refreshed the page just to make sure I wasn’t misreading it. I got the same language and numbers. Then, I pulled up the public bonus offer on my phone to compare. It was also 80,000 miles — but it required $3,500 in spending within 4 months.

That’s when I realized this wasn’t just another inflight credit card welcome offer. It was the same highest-ever public bonus, but with dramatically less spending required to unlock it.

So I did what I always tell people not to do: I applied for a credit card at 30,000 feet.

The application was straightforward — basic personal details, income, and the usual disclosures. It asked for a 6-digit code from a flight attendant to tie the application to the inflight welcome offer.

Then, a few seconds later, I was approved.

Just like that, I had 80,000 AAdvantage miles pending — all for a mere $1,000 in spend — before we even started our descent.

Should You Apply for Inflight Credit Card Welcome Offers?

I still don’t think applying during an inflight credit card pitch makes sense most of the time. I’ve been doing this long enough to know that those offers are usually the same (or worse) than what you’ll find online.

Sometimes it’s the same bonus offer but with a higher spending requirement. Other times, you can find a better version publicly that includes a statement credit or some extra perk. Sometimes, you might even get a targeted welcome offer in the mail or in your inbox that’s better than what’s available to the general public.

In those situations, there’s just no reason to apply at 30,000 feet. I always tell my network to take their time, compare the public welcome offers, and make sure a card actually fits into their overall strategy before hitting submit on an application.

But this time was different. It was the same highest-ever 80,000-mile bonus offer, just with a dramatically lower minimum spend. There wasn’t a catch or downside.

Final Thoughts

I never thought I’d apply for a credit card from an inflight welcome offer. Yet here we are.

Will I suddenly start applying for every inflight welcome offer I see? Likely not. But next time I’m cruising at 30,000 feet, and the Wi-Fi page pops up with a credit card pitch, I might not instinctively close the page.

Who knows? Maybe the bonus offer will be good enough to make me do something I always tell people never to do. If that happens, I’ll surely write about it again.
